The Centennial Cheltenham Gold Cup culminated with Galopin Des Champs retaining his crown. With odds-on favorite, the champion successfully managed to beat contenders such as Gerri Colombe, Corach Rambler, and L'Homme Presse. The race saw high drama with Fastorslow unseating the rider and Nassalam pulling up mid-race. Paul Townend, Galopin's jockey, joined the elite club of four-time Gold-Cup winning jockeys.

Legends were in attendance at Prestbury Park, as the sport celebrated the 100th running of the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Winning trainers of Gold Cups past and present carried flags onto the course before the racecard began. Punters had already spoken by that point, as defending champion Galopin Des Champs was supported into odds-on favourite.

Market rival, Fastorslow took a walk in the betting during the morning, with punters fearing the ground had turned against him. Bravemansgame and Corach Rambler were also weak on the exchanges, with money coming for a couple of proven mudlarks in Gerri Colombe and L'Homme Presse.

Monkfish joined stablemate Galopin Des Champs in the field, along with Irish counterparts Jungle Boogie and Gentlemansgame. Welsh National winner, Nassalam and last year's Brown Advisory king, The Real Whacker completed the Gold Cup line-up.

Sam Twiston-Davies rode The Real Whacker into the opening obstacle and seemed keen to make the running. L'Homme Presse and Galopin Des Champs went forward early too, with Gentlemansgame on the shoulder of the leaders.

Fastorslow, Bravemansgame and Gerri Colombe settled nicely in the middle of the pack. Corach Rambler and Nassalam were outpaced early. Monkfish and Jungle Boogie started near the rear too.

At the top of the hill, The Real Whacker made his first mistake. Everyone else had jumped fluently, apart from maybe Corach Rambler, who was starting to get a little detached when the field passed the stands for the first time.

The crowd roared the field into the first bend, where Bravemansgame made a little ground around the outside of the field. Fastorslow jumped out to his right at the 13th flight, as L'Homme Presse moved forward to challenge The Real Whacker.

Fastorslow then made another mistake, unseating JJ Slevin with six flights to jump. Nassalam was pulled up, as Jungle Boogie and Monkfish dropped back through the field.

With the loose horse causing problems, The Real Whacker gave way and it was Galopin Des Champs who battled his way to the front. Gerri Colombe, who had been under pressure for a while, set off in pursuit.

Try as he might, Gerri Colombe couldn't bridge the gap with the defending champion, who had soon opened up an unassailable lead. Paul Townend punched the air as he crossed the line, joining the exclusive club of four-time Gold Cup-winning jockeys.

Corach Rambler came from the clouds and threatened to challenge for second, but ran out of steam in the closing stages. L'Homme Presse was prominent throughout and hung on to finish a valiant fourth.

Very few horses have managed to retain the Gold Cup down the years. Galopin Des Champs has done just that and, in truth, the result never looked in doubt. Galopin is a great!
