2026 Epsom Derby Preview
Despite good-to-soft ground at Epsom and an adverse forecast on Saturday, Benvenuto Cellini remains the clear favourite for today's Derby. Aidan O'Brien's star struggled on softer ground last season, but heads into Epsom on the back of a runaway success in the Chester Vase at Chester.
Pierre Bonnard had been backed into as short as 5/1 when the rain arrived at Chester, but Christophe Soumillon's mount has been a little weak in the betting over the past 24 hours. After Thundering On's success in the Oaks on Friday, her stablemate James J Braddock - who beat Pierre Bonnard in a recent trial at Leopardstown - has been backed into a single-figure price.
Item took down Aidan O'Brien's pair of Action and Christmas Day when winning the Dante Stakes at York, and Andrew Balding's star splits Benvenuto Cellini and Pierre Bonnard in the betting. Ballysax Stakes winner Christmas Day was only third at York, but he's been backed into 14/1 since the field was confirmed on Thursday. Action will also represent Aidan O'Brien today, and will likely be tasked with making the running.
William Haggas' Maltese Cross heads Epsom after winning the Derby Trial at Lingfield, but has drifted since the going shifted to soft. Bay Of Brilliance finished second in that trial on his first start of the season, and Ralph Beckett looks set to roll the dice and send his lightly-raced colt to Epsom. Newmarket Stakes winner Ancient Egypt will represent Charlie Johnston and Amo Racing.

The remaining five runners are all available at 150/1 or bigger. Balzac finished a distant third in the trials at Epsom and Lingfield. Rebel Rocker placed second to Saxon Street in the Blue Ribband Trial. Poker, A Taste Of Glory and Alderman are rated no higher than 84, but have been allowed to take their chance in Saturday's Classic.
