Two stars from the 2023/24 National Hunt season clashed for the first time in today's Fighting Fifth Hurdle.

Grade One-winning juvenile, Sir Gino was rerouted from the novice chase division to fill the void left by Constitution Hill. Nicky Henderson's four-year-old was cut into odds-on favouritism as soon as he was declared for Newcastle, but Sir Gino was surprisingly weak in the betting on the morning of the contest.

Money arrived for Mystical Power, who finished second in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle before claiming Grade One wins at Aintree and Punchestown. Willie Mullins' raider was having his first start in the colours of Rich Ricci, after he and John Magnier purchased shares from JP McManus.

Following Brentford Hope's withdrawal, Welsh Champion Hurdle winner Lump Sum was backed into third-favouritism. Adrian Keatley ran Ebor runner-up Kihavah. Take No Chances jumped up to Grade One level after an emphatic Listed win at Wetherby. Tellherthename and Benson completed the line-up for Saturday's main event.

Sir Gino was keen on his way to the start, having skipped a lap around the parade ring. Nico De Boinville still managed to settle his mount down once the starter dropped his flag, and Henderson's star sat third in the early stages, with Kihavah making the running ahead of Tellherthename.

Mark Walsh looked keen to keep tabs on Sir Gino, and sat on the shoulder of his rival in the early stages. Lump Sum was a little wider out in fifth, with Benson and Take No Chances bringing up the rear.

Lump Sum was lit up coming down the back straight, pulling his way into second. Sir Gino's jumping wasn't particularly fluent. Mystical Power, however, was slow over the fourth last and Mark Walsh was forced to bump the favourite along for a stride or two.

Another slow leap at the third-last put Mystical Power firmly on the back foot and Willie Mullins' raider lost touch with the leading pack on the turn for home.

Kihavah was still in the lead, with Kump Sum for company. Nico De Boinville took Sir Gino a little wide turning in, but Henderson's star soon had the leaders in his sights.

Sir Gino eased his way to the front on the approach to the final flight. Another bold leap at the last helped De Boinville's mount open up a clear lead and Sir Gino scampered eight lengths clear on the run to the line.

Lump Sum kept on well to finish a clear second, having run very keen throughout the contest. Kihavah kept on valiantly to finish third, ahead of Take No Chances and Tellherthename. Mystical Power never featured.

On the back of that power-packed display, bet365 cut Sir Gino into 4/1 third-favouritism for the 2025 Champion Hurdle. Lossiemouth remains the 9/4 favourite, with State Man available at 7/2.
