Top horses from four different countries locked horns in the historic Juddmonte International Stakes this afternoon.
Delacroix got the better of Ombudsman in a thrilling finish to the Coral-Eclipse Stakes last month. Aidan O'Brien's star was a little weak in the market going into today's assignment, though, and it was John Gosden's Royal Ascot winner who topped the betting.
Japanese hopes rested on the shoulders of Danon Decile, who was having his first run since an impressive triumph in the Sheema Classic at Meydan. Francis Graffard sent Daryz over from France, following four wins from four starts on home soil.
Oisin Murphy rode the only filly in the field, See The Fire, who bolted up in the Middleton Stakes over this course-and-distance in the spring. Birr Castle completed Wednesday's field, and the Godolphin outsider had been supplemented into the field to set the pace for Ombudsman.

A slow early gallop followed by a sprint to the finish didn't suit Ombudsman at Sandown, which is why Birr Castle was added to the field. It was no surprise, therefore, when Rab Havlin's mount went straight to the front once the gates burst open, and Andrew Fabre's raider moved into an early six-length lead.
Danon Decile raced keenly behind the pacemaker and sat second early on. Delacroix broke well, but was quickly restrained by Ryan Moore, as Rab Havlin allowed Birr Castle to stride 15 lengths clear of the field.
William Buick responded by allowing Ombudsman to move onto the tail of Danon Decile. However, as the field turned for home, Birr Castle had already made his way into the home straight.
Just when it seemed like we might get a copy of the Sussex Stakes, where outsider Qirat held on to win, Birr Castle began to flounder. William Buick soon had the leader in his sights and Ombudsman flew past his stablemate at the two pole and quickly put the race to bed.
Ryan Moore and Delacroix kept on to finish third, but the Coral-Eclipse form was reversed in emphatic fashion. The only other horse to make any inroads was See The Fire, but she didn't pick up well enough to even pass Birr Castle, who held on to finish third having held a near 25-length lead at one stage.
Danon Decile was found badly wanting for pace. The only horse he beat home was Daryz, who didn't handle the big occasion and crossed the line last.
