Kalpana, trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by Colin Keane, secured a narrow victory in the 2026 Yorkshire Oaks at York. After overcoming early competition and a bold front-running effort from Sugar Island, Kalpana surged ahead in the final stages. Despite a late, determined charge from Sparan Nua, Kalpana held on for the win, completing the Juddmonte International and Yorkshire Oaks double. Minnie Hauk finished third. The result underlines Kalpana’s versatility, especially on softer ground, and cements her status among the season’s top fillies and mares.

A quality field of fillies and mares entered the stalls at York ahead of the 2026 Yorkshire Oaks today.

Andrew Balding's Kalpana beat the boys when landing the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes on her most recent outing at Ascot. Colin Keane's mount has always been at her best on softer ground, and punters backed Kalpana into odds-on favouritism when the rain arrived at York.

Minnie Hauk returned to defend the crown she won last season, but had to bounce back after a disappointing effort behind Kalpana at Ascot. The leading three-year-old in the field was Johanna Walsh, who ran away with the Irish Oaks when last seen at the Curragh.

Musidora winner Legacy Link, Ribblesdale scorer Earth Shot and Irish Oaks runner-up Inis Mor also represented the Classic generation. Ralph Beckett's Lancashire Oaks winner Tattycoram made her Group One debut. Sparan Nua represented Jim Bolger, with Epsom Oaks third Sugar Island completing the field.

Sugar Island held on from the front to place in the Epsom Oaks, and Aidan O'Brien's second-string was on pacemaking duties again. Ronan Whelan took the outsider straight to the front from stall five, with Earth Shot and Johanna Walsh sitting in the second rank.

Sparan Nua was ridden a bit more forward than usual. Inis Mor hugged the rail, with Kalpana on her outside. Ryan Moore and Minnie Hauk sat second-last early on, with Legacy Link trailing in the early stages.

Before the end of the back straight, Sugar Island had pulled ten lengths clear. At the five-furlong marker, that lead had stretched to 15 lengths, and with three furlongs to travel, Sugar Island still held a lengthy advantage.

Kalpana was the first to make her move and began to bridge the gap. Ryan Moore tried to rouse a response from Minnie Hauk, who made slow progress from the rear. All of the other jockeys were now hard at work, but few were making any inroads.

Kalpana took command with a furlong to travel and looked to have the race sewn up. Suddenly, Sparan Nua burst from the chasing pack, forcing Colin Keane to get to work. Kalpana was paddling. Sparan Nua kept charging, but the line came just in time to save the odds-on favourite's blushes.

Andrew Balding completed the Juddmonte International and Yorkshire Oaks double by the skin of his teeth. Rossa Ryan looked dejected as the replay was shown on the big screen. He'd given Sparan Nua an absolute peach.

Ryan Moore and Minnie Hauk finished third, without ever really threatening to challenge. Earth Shot was the best of the three-year-olds, finishing a distant fourth ahead of Tattycoram.
