Sadly, the race was overshadowed by the unexpected loss of Trueshan, the 2021 winner, who encountered difficulties mid-race. While Scandinavia's performance promises a bright future, the racing community was left reflecting on a poignant moment amidst the exhilaration.

In the absence of two-time defending champion Kyprios, Aidan O'Brien ran two in Tuesday's Goodwood Cup.
Illinois finished second on his first crack at two miles in the Ascot Gold Cup and Ryan Moore's mount went off as the favourite. Bahrain Trophy winner, Scandinavia looked likely to fight his stablemate for favouritism, but Wayne Lordan's mount was a little weak in the betting before the off.
Of John and Thady Gosden's three runners, Sweet William was the most popular with punters, moving into second-favouritism before the off. French Master was a little weak in the market, with each-way support coming for Military Order.
Sunway represented David Menuisier and Oisin Murphy. 2021 Goodwood Cup winner, Trueshan took his chance, along with fellow nine-year-old Dubai Future.

Both French Master and Sweet William were rousted along at the start, as Scandinavia took up the early running. Ryan Moore then guided Illinois to the front and the two Ballydoyle runners led coming out of the first bend.
Hollie Doyle took Trueshan forward to sit between the Aidan O'Brien runners. Sunway was prominent along the rail too as Scandinavia dropped back to fourth.
Military Academy travelled comfortably on the rail in fifth. Sweet William was niggled along early to hold his position in sixth. Dubai Future and French Master sat last and second last, as the field passed the halfway stage.
Turning into the straight, Illinois continued to hold an advantage, putting the other riders under pressure. Military Academy was the first to crack. French Master struggled to pick up and Sunway began to drop away.
Sweet William found his stride late on and moved up to challenge the Ballydoyle runners. However, with a furlong to travel, it was clear that the winner would come from Ballydoyle.
Scandinavia settled down for a set-to with the market leader and Wayne Lordan's mount began to gain the upperhand. O'Brien's second-string opened up a slim advantage in the final 100 yards, and Illinois could do nothing to reel in his younger rival.
Lordan celebrated in-front of the Goodwood faithful, but there was a subdued atmosphere post-race. Sadly, Trueshan seemed to go wrong at the top of the hill and Alan King's popular stayer couldn't be saved.
