Day two at the July Festival is headlined by the Falmouth Stakes. This Group One provides three-year-old fillies with their first opportunity to take on older mares over a mile, and it's the outstanding three-year-old of this generation, Inspiral who dominates the betting for Friday's renewal of the Falmouth.

Having been forced to skip the Guineas with injury, Inspiral returned to action at Royal Ascot with a flawless victory in the Coronation Stakes. John Gosden's filly will now defend her unbeaten record at Newmarket and bet365 make Inspiral their 1/4 favourite.

Inspiral will face just four rivals on Friday. Prosperous Voyage finished second behind the favourite twice as a juvenile and is much better than her Royal Ascot performance suggests. Sandrine was also beaten a long way behind Inspiral in the Coronation Stakes, but she met trouble in-running and an improved performance is expected.

Primo Bacio returned to something like her best form with a staying-on third in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes last time out. French raider, Sibila Spain was due to make her British debut in that Group Two, but she played up in the stalls and had to be withdrawn.

Inspiral is entitled to come on for her first outing of the season - a frightening prospect for the trainers of the four fillies who line up in opposition. There's only one likely winner of this Group One, but at 1/4, Inspiral offers little-to-no value.

The betting without Inspiral market does, however, make for interesting reading. Bet365 has the other four runners priced between 9/4 and 10/3, with SANDRINE the least-fancied of the quartet.

I backed Andrew Balding's filly at an each-way price in the Coronation Stakes, following her solid reappearance run in the 1000 Guineas. David Probert held his mount up behind the pace and was thrown widest of all as she tried to improve on the turn for home. Try as she might, Sandrine could never work herself back into contention following that mishap, eventually crossing the line seventh.

If you take Inspiral out of that race, the second and eighth-placed runners were separated by just three lengths, so Sandrine's performance was better than it looks on paper. Balding's filly won nicely at this meeting 12 months ago and I wouldn't be surprised if she followed Inspiral home.

Verdict

Sandrine has just as good a chance at finishing second to Inspiral as any of the other three runners, so backing her at 10/3 in bet365's without Inspiral market makes plenty of sense.
