Seven quality juveniles took part in the Fillies' Mile this afternoon, all hoping to put themselves in contention for next year's 1000 Guineas.

Desert Flower carried an unbeaten record into Friday's feature and Charlie Appleby's May Hill Stakes winner was backed into odds-on favouritism before the off. Aidan O'Brien ran three against the favourite, with Ryan Moore opting to ride May Hill Stakes runner-up, January.

Tom Marquand got the leg-up on O'Brien's second-string Dreamy who, like the favourite, was yet to taste defeat in her career. O'Brien celebrated a 25/1 winner of the Oh So Sharp Stakes earlier on the card, so the outsider of the Ballydoyle trio, Ballet Slippers still garnered respect.

Tabiti and Anna Swan jumped up into Group One company, having won four times between them earlier in the campaign. Adrian Murray's California Dreamer, herself a multiple Group-race runner-up, was the outsider of the party.

Desert Flower was the first to show, but William Buick immediately took a pull on the favourite, as Dreamy and Ballet Slippers went forward to cut out the running.

Buick eventually settled Desert Flower in the second rank, alongside Ryan Moore and January. Anna Swan, Tabiti and California Dreamer were held up at the rear.

Going into the dip, Dreamy attempted to push on, a move which seemed to watch Buick a little flat-footed. The favourite was pushed along for a stride or two and as the pacemakers gave way, Ryan Moore asked January for an effort.

Desert Flower responded to her rider's urgings and set off in pursuit of January. It seemed for a little while like viewers were in for a thrilling battle to the finish, that was until Buick asked Desert Flower to open the taps and the odds-on favourite responded magnificently.

In the blink of an eye, Charlie Appleby's filly opened up a commanding lead and January had no response. Desert Flower drifted a little right in the closing stages, but still completed a seven-length romp in the Fillies' Mile, earning quotes of 4/1 for the 2025 1000 Guineas with bookmaker's Boylesports.
