Having won the Cheveley Park Stakes with Lake Victoria half an hour before, Aidan O'Brien saddled Whistlejacket ahead of the Middle Park Stakes.

O'Brien's Prix Morny winner was cut into odds-on favouritism when the field was confirmed on Thursday. However, despite stablemate and second-favourite Ides Of March coming out of the race because of the ground, Ryan Moore's mount was only a shade of odds-on when the stalls burst open.

Charlie Appleby and William Buick teamed up with Shadow Of Light, who kept on well to finish second behind Cool Hoof Luke in the Gimcrack Stakes. James Doyle rode unbeaten Wathnan Racing colt Defence Minister, who was looking to hand trainer Hamad Al Jehani his first Group One win on British soil.

Colin Keane jumped into the saddle of Richmond Stakes winner Black Forza. Andrew Balding's Jouncy and rank outsider Dash Dizzy completed the line-up.

Dash Dizzy moved straight into the lead, where she was tracked by Ryan Moore and Whistlejacket in the early stages. Defence Minister was positioned prominently too, as Jouncy travelled a little keenly in the early stages.

William Buick stalked Whistlejacket aboard Shadow Of Light, as Colin Keane held Black Forza up at the rear of the field.

With two furlongs to travel, Ryan Moore asked Whistlejacket to take control of the race and soon overtook Dash Dizzy. William Buick, meanwhile, was still travelling comfortably aboard Shadow Of Light and took aim at the favourite coming out of the dip.

In the blink of an eye, Shadow Of Light quickened into the lead and Buick's mount never looked back. Whistlejacket offered no response as Charlie Appleby's star opened up a four-length lead and Buick punched the air as the winner crossed the line.

Whistlejacket still managed to finish second ahead of Dash Dizzy, who ran a mighty race from the front to hang on for third. The time of the race was slower than the Cheveley Park Stakes, but that didn't stop Boylesports from cutting Shadow Of Light into 14/1 for next year's 2000 Guineas.
