2025 Belmont Stakes Entries
Following a thrilling battle down the stretch at Churchill Downs, Sovereignty saw off Journalism to claim Kentucky Derby glory.
Billy Mott opted to skip the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes with his Classic winner. Journalism, however, overcame a troubled passage to justify even-money favourite and claim his second Group One win on the dirt at Pimlico.
Baeza got into the Kentucky Derby as a reserve, despite finishing second to Journalism in the Santa Anita Derby, and John Shirreffs star put in an excellent performance to finish third. Rodriguez's withdrawal sealed Baeza spot in the Derby, but he returns to action, having won the Wood Memorial on his most recent outing in April.
Chad Brown will throw Hill Road into Classic company, following his victory in the Peter Pan Stakes here at Belmont. The sixth and final entrant is Jamie Osbourne's British raider Heart Of Honour, who remains on Stateside despite a lengthy defeat behind Journalism in the Preakness Stakes. Crudo and Uncaged complete the field.
2025 Belmont Stakes Tips
Rodriguez and Crudo will likely set a decent pace on Saturday, which should set the race up nicely for a closer. Hill Road finished well to take the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont last month, but stall one is a tough spot for a hold-up horse and Chad Brown's colt has to prove that he's up to Group One level.
Journalism ran an incredible race in the Preakness Stakes. Umberto Rispoli's mount caught a horror trip and lost plenty of ground when fighting for position at the two pole, but finished like a train to catch Gosger and claim his second Group One win.
Michael McCarthy's star will now run in his third Triple Crown race in the space of five weeks. Journalism is certainly tough enough to deal with that busy schedule, but SOVEREIGNTY (13/8) has freshness on his side, having opted to skip the Preakness and target the third leg of the Triple Crown.
Billy Mott's star got the better of Journalism and third-favourite, Baeza in the Kentucky Derby. Both of the market leaders caught a nice trip from the rear of the field, but it was Sovereignty who had a little too much staying power in the closing stages.
Having been shoulder to shoulder for much of the home straight, Sovereignty forged a length-and-a-half clear of Journalism late on to claim victory in that historic Classic. The pace set-up here could be similar, and it's hard to see how Journalism makes up that ground with Sovereignty, who skipped the Preakness with this target in mind.
