The first Grade One race of the new National Hunt season takes place on Saturday, as the BetVictor Champion Chase headlines the card at Down Royal. This three-mile chase was first run as a Grade One in 2002, and has since been won by legendary names like Beef Or Salmon and Kauto Star.

2025 BetVictor Champion Chase Runners

For the seventh season in a row, Envoi Allen will take part in this two-day meeting at Down Royal. Henry De Bromhead's star won this race in 2022 and 2024, with his only defeat at this meeting coming in 2023, where he was touched off by Gerri Colombe.

Sitting second in the market we find Spillane's Tower, who enjoyed a winless campaign last term. Jimmy Mangan's star was narrowly denied by Fact To File on his reappearance in the John Durkan, and may end up waiting for that race again if the ground is deemed too quick.

Jack Kennedy will partner with Found A Fifty, who steps up to three miles for the first time. Gordon Elliott is also represented by the in-form Western Fold, who'll be looking to complete a five-timer following wins in the Galway Plate and PWC Champion Chase.

Elliott will also throw multiple Grade One-placer Stellar Story into the mix. Noel Meade's Affordale Fury renews rivalries with Western Fold, following his runner-up finish at Gowran Park. 115-rated Flash Collonges is the outlier in the market.

2025 BetVictor Champion Chase Tips

Envoi Allen's record at this track is incredible, and another bold showing is anticipated. That being said, De Bromhead's star is 11, turning 12 this season, and could be vulnerable to a younger rival.

Like the market leader, FOUND A FIFTY (11/2) boasts a winning record at this meeting. Gordon Elliott's star won easily on his chasing debut over two-and-a-half miles in 2023, and produced an excellent weight-carrying display to beat Pinkerton in the Grade Two Chase over 2m4f 12 months ago.

Much like the previous season, Elliott then decided to campaign Found A Fifty over two miles. Kennedy's mount managed to win two Grade Ones over this trip as a novice and the Grade Two Fortria Chase last term, but always seemed to be crying out for a longer trip.

Found A Fifty again proved his quality with an attritional victory in the Jack McInerney Memorial Chase at Easter, where the heavy ground at Fairyhouse wouldn't have been to his liking. Kennedy's mount loves nice ground and I'm confident that this step up to three miles will suit this multiple Grade One winner.
