The first major race of the new National Hunt season takes place on Friday, as a field of talented youngsters run in the Persian War Novices' Hurdle. Named in honour of one of the all-time greats, the Persian War has produced plenty of good horses down the years, with the likes of Bonanza Boy, Reve De Sivola and Silviniaco Conti going on to win multiple Group Ones over hurdles and fences.

2023 Persian War Novices' Hurdle Tips - Cold Sobar
This race revolves around Champion Bumper third Captain Teague, who could be one of Britain's top novice hurdlers this term.
Paul Nicholls' first Persian War winner, Valley Henry struck on his hurdles debut in 2000, but all of Nicholls' winners since were either second-season novices or were given a prep run. Even Silviniaco Conti ran in a novice at Bangor before landing this Grade Two, so Nicholls clearly holds Captain Teague in very high regard.
That being said, the favourite is an exceptionally short price and there's every chance his jumping won't be foot-perfect first time out. With three paid places to play for, I'll take Captain Teague on with COLD SOBAR (20/1) for Stuart and Sam Coltherd.
A winner between the flags in Ireland, Cold Sobar scored twice in novice hurdles at Newcastle in the spring. Coltherd's six-year-old barely came out of second gear on debut and was even more impressive over a longer trip second time out, where he gave the odds-on favourite a change by flattening the last, but picked up well for pressure and kicked four lengths clear in the closing stages.
The ground was heavy for both of Cold Sobar's victories, so the deluge of rain that's been forecast on Wednesday and Thursday will delight the Coltherd team. Cold Sobar clearly has ability and a very good attitude. He could be hard to peg back if the ground is testing.
