The penultimate race on day one at the Cheltenham Festival is the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, which has moved from Ladies’ Day to Champions Day for this year’s meeting. The Boodles is often contested by four-year-olds who didn’t quite make the cut for the Triumph Hurdle, and all of the sports top trainers are likely to be represented in this year’s renewal.

2021 Boodles Juvenile Handicap Trends

I’ve taken a look through the last ten editions of this juvenile handicap and picked out four recurring trends.

  • All of the last 10 winners had never run at Cheltenham before
  • All of the last 10 winners were making their handicap debuts
  • 9 of the last 10 winners had run at least 3 times over hurdles
  • 9 of the last 10 winners had won that season

Teahupoo features in the current betting, but it seems likely he will be kept in Ireland during the spring. Zanahiyr and Quilixios will both go to the Triumph Hurdle, and they will likely be joined in that Grade One by Busselton and Youmdor.

When Zanahiyr and Quilixios drop out of the Boodles, Nassalam and Baladin De Mesc will be top-rated, and forced to carry a top-weight of 11-10.

2021 Boodles Juvenile Handicap Tip 1 – Saint Sam

All of the last seven winners of the Boodles carried 11-00 or more, so looking towards the classier horses at the top of the weights is sensible. There’s going to be tons of pace on here too. Nassalam is a free-going sort, as are Riviere D’etel and Cabot Cliffs, and all three will want to make the running.

SAINT SAM also likes to be up with the pace, but it’s not essential. During his time in France, where he won two of his three starts over hurdles, Willie Mullins’ recruit won twice with well-timed late challenges.

Since arriving in Ireland, Saint Sam has been beaten twice by Zanahiyr and once by Quilixios, with all three outings coming in Graded company. Although he didn’t get within the five lengths of the winner on any of those three starts, Saint Sam has place second twice and finished ahead of Busselton, Druid’s Altar and Youmdor.

In his Cheltenham Festival stable tour, Willie Mullins said he was leaning towards running Saint Sam in the Boodles. I think the British Handicapper could have rated Mullins’ juvenile higher than the 139 he’s been given, and he should be considered the leading contender.

*UPDATE*

We learned over the weekend that French Aseel has been ruled out of the meeting, which means Willie Mullins may choose to run Saint Sam in the Triumph.

2021 Boodles Juvenile Handicap Tip 2 – Homme Public

Given a capacity field is guaranteed and the average winning SP in the Boodles is around 20/1, backing another at a longer price would be wise.

Her Indoors has proven herself a hardy mare this season, and Alan King’s mare holds appeal. One I think is treated a little better at the weights, though, is Oliver Greenall’s HOMME PUBLIC.

Homme Public’s form in France ties in closely with Houx Gris, who’s been backed into 6/1 for this handicap in recent days. Homme Public finished four lengths ahead of Houx Gris when they met for the first time. Paul Nicholls’ charge managed to reverse that form and win next time out at Auteuil, but there was only a short-head between the two as they crossed the line.

On his British debut at Catterick, Homme Public was outjumped by Tinnahalla down the home straight and was beaten two lengths. Greenall’s juvenile made no mistake second time out, powering to victory over a rival rated 112, who was getting over a stone from the winner at the weights.

Homme Public will have to step up his game to match the Irish runners at the top of the weights, but based on what he’s produced during his career so far, he could produce a surprise challenge on day one of the Cheltenham Festival

Verdict

Saint Sam wouldn't look out of place in the Triumph Hurdle, so to find him carrying just 11-8 here is a chance you can't afford to miss.

I also fancy a small saver on Homme Public, who's shown he has ability and remains open to plenty of improvement.
