The first of three handicap races that will be run on day three of the Cheltenham Festival is the Pertemps Final. Qualifying races have been taking place across Britain and Ireland over the past 12 months and a capacity field of 24 hurdlers will take part in this thrilling three-mile event.

We won't be finalising any of our handicap tips until the final fields have been confirmed. In this article, you'll find the latest Pertemps Final odds, key recurring ten-year trends and a shortlist of possible selections.

Pertemps Final Key Trends

  • 10 of the last 10 winners were eight-years-old or younger
  • 10 of the last 10 winners had no more than two previous handicap victories
  • 9 of the last 10 winners had run after January 10th
  • 8 of the last 10 winners finished fourth or better last time out
  • 8 of the last 10 winners had run over three miles on either one, two or three occasions
  • 8 of the last 10 winners returned an SP of 14/1 or shorter

Since the turn of the century, only two winners of the Pertemps Final had won a qualifier. Prior to this season, a top-six finish in a qualifier was enough to book your spot at the Cheltenham Festival, which allowed less-exposed runners to sneak into the Final, where they'd inevitably show their true colours.

In a bid to halt this trend, the qualification rules were altered at the start of this season. A top four finish in a qualifier is now required to secure a spot in the Final, so it's no coincidence to see that five of the first seven horses in the betting have won qualifying races.

Shoot First won the qualifier at Cheltenham back in October. Charlie Byrnes has had his seven-year-old laid out for the Final ever since and, knowing Byrnes, Shoot First is sure to have plenty left up his sleeve. That being said, over the past decade, 80% of the handicap winners at the Cheltenham Festival had run at least once that year and Shoot First has a 145-day absence to overcome.

Both winners of the qualifiers at Leopardstown are well-found in the market. Maxxum bolted up in the qualifier over Christmas, before Perceval Legallois won nicely at the Dublin Racing Festival. Perceval Legallois will be forced to run off a 15-pound higher mark at Cheltenham, while the more progressive Maxxum was rated seven pounds higher by the British handicapper, meaning he'll have to carry 11-10 in the Final, unless a claimer is booked to take the ride.

Pertemps Final Tips Shortlist

Only four Irish qualifiers have been declared in the capacity field for this Final, but they're all well-found in the market. My preference would be for Gordon Elliott's third-string THE BOSSES OSCAR, who was the beaten favourite in this race two years ago when he finished second to Mrs Milner off a mark of 151.

Having struggled over fences last season, Elliott's eight-year-old secured some decent results back over hurdles in the summer and booked his spot in the Final with a third-place finish at Musselburgh last month. The Bosses Oscar returns to the Pertemps Final rated six-pounds lower than last year and five-pound claimer, Ben Harvey comes in for the ride.

Of the British contenders, I like the chances of HECTOR JAVILEX, who hacked up in the Paddy Power Handicap Hurdle held over this course-and-distance on New Years' Day.

Charlie Longsdon's six-year-old qualified for the Pertemps Final behind Itchy Feet at Huntingdon, where Lilly Pinchin seemed more than happy to settle for the fourth and final qualification spot. Hector Javilex loved the soft ground here at Cheltenham in January and could still be ahead of the handicapper.

Verdict

The Bosses Oscar and Hector Javilex are our two against the field in the Pertemps Final.
