Fresh off his first winner of the week in the Mares' Hurdle, Gordon Elliott sent out Teahupoo and Honesty Policy in the Stayers' Hurdle.

The 2024 winner remained at the head of the market, despite punters latching onto Dan Skelton's Kabral Du Mathan. Willie Mullins' Ballyburn was another popular pick with the public, and was cut into 13/2 before the off.

Bob Olinger got the better of Teahupoo 12 months ago, and came in for a little bit of support before the off. Ma Shantou was a little weak in the betting, but none were weaker than Honesty Policy, who was eventually sent off at a double-figure price.

Nicky Henderson and Nico De Boinville teamed up with Impose Toi. Doddiethegreat also represented the Henderson yard. Home By The Lee was having his fifth start in the Stayers' Hurdle. Former King George winner Hewick completed the field.

Stayers' Hurdle Race Recap

For once, the field was sent on its way at the first attempt. That seemed to take Paddy Hanlon by surprise aboard Hewick, who had to be rousted along to make the running.

There was little chance in the running order through the first half of the race. Hewick led Home By The Lee, with Doddiethegreat on their outside. Ma Shantou sat quietly on the inner, and was tracked by Impose Toi.

Teahupoo was held up in the midfield, alongside Kabral Du Mathan and Honesty Policy. Bob Olinger took his customary position near the rear, with Ballyburn eating grass at the rear of the field.

At the top of the hill, the field began to quicken. Jack Kennedy positioned Teahupoo on the tail of the leaders. Hewick fell away rather quickly, leaving Home By The Lee in the lead.

First to crack was Doddiethegreat, quickly followed by Impose Toi and Ma Shantou. Honesty Policy, Bob Olinger and Ballyburn began to make inroads, but Home By The Lee still held a narrow lead on the turn for home.

JJ Slevin galvanised Joseph O'Brien's teenager, and Home By The Lee opened up a lead. Kabral Du Mathan had tanked into the contest under Harry Skelton, and loomed up to challenge the leader approaching the last.

However, upon landing the final flight, Kabral Du Mathan's tank emptied. Home By The Lee, meanwhile, forged on up the hill to claim a shock victory in the Stayers' Hurdle at the fifth attempt.

Ballyburn backers might feel slightly aggrieved, as Paul Townend's mount got caught behind the leaders and had to be angled out to challenge. Bob Olinger found a second wind and ran on to place third, but all the plaudits go to Home By The Lee and Joseph O'Brien. To get an 11-year-old to win this race, after running poorly in it so many times, is some training achievement.
