The first Irish Classics of the season will take place this weekend. Saturday's card is headlined by the Irish 2000 Guineas, a race that has been won by legends like Grundy, Dubawi and Kingman during its 100-year history.

2024 Irish 2000 Guineas Entries

Rosallion tops the market for Saturday's Irish 2000 Guineas, having finished second to Notable Speech on his reappearance at Newmarket. Sean Levey will partner the market leader again, with Jamie Spencer riding stablemate Haatem, who won the Craven on his return to action before following Rosallion home at Newmarket.

Aidan O'Brien's challenge will be led by last year's Coventry Stakes winner River Tiber. Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner, Unquestionable joins stablemate River River in the field, as does Mountain Bear, who finished a place behind Unquestionable at Santa Anita.

Joseph O'Brien will be represented by Atlantic Coast, despite a seventh-place finish in the Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial. Bright Stripes finished a place behind Atlantic Coast that day, but bounced back with victory in the Tetrach Stakes - the race Paddington won before claiming Irish 2000 Guineas glory. Paddington kicked off last season by winning the Madrid Handicap and this year's winner of that contest, Jack Davidson's Take Me To Church rounds off the field.

2024 Irish 2000 Guineas Tips

All of the Group One races we've seen so far during this flat season have provided a shock. The two Guineas at Newmarket, the Lockinge, the two French Guineas and the Prix Ganay have been won by outsiders, as the market leaders flattered to deceive.

The sport seems in desperate need of a superstar and I'm hoping to see a seismic performance from ROSALLION (6/5) on Saturday.

Richard Hannon has always held this colt in high regard. Sean Levey's mount beat Unquestionable in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on his final juvenile start and ran a cracker on his reappearance in the 2000 Guineas, where only Notable Speech was strong enough to beat him.

In the build-up to Saturday's Classic, Richard Hannon was quoted as saying that Rosallion was "working like a genius". Levey's mount finished ahead of race-fit stablemate Haatem at Newmarket, and if you asked Hannon whether those placings would be reversed this weekend, I'm sure he'd give you a fairly short answer.

River Tiber and Unquestionable are both classy horses. Personally, I'd say there's more to come from River Tiber and I don't see why he won't see out a mile. Yet, Aidan O'Brien's three-year-olds have improved for their reappearances and O'Brien has said that River Tiber, Unquestionable and 1000 Guineas favourite, Opera Singer would need the outing this weekend.

Verdict

Irish 2000 Guineas

Rosallion has the best form in the book and an excellent run under his belt. Sean Levey has been placed kindly in stall six and I'm hoping that, for the first time during this flat season, that class will come to the fore.
