The highlight of the Punchestown Festival's opening day is the Punchestown Champion Chase. Two Grade One winners, Dinoblue and Gentleman De Mee, are leading the market. Dinoblue won the Grade One at Leopardstown and has recently earned second-place finishes. Captain Guinness had a surprise victory in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham while Banbridge is set to drop back down to two miles. Tips suggest that Dinoblue could beat the odds, Gentleman De Mee could reverse his form and Banbridge could prove to be a value bet.

The opening day of the Punchestown Festival is headlined by the Punchestown Champion Chase. This two-mile Grade One has been won by many of National Hunt racing's finest chasers and two seasonal Grade One winners are currently battling for favouritism.

2024 Punchestown Champion Chase Entries
With El Fabiolo and Jonbon confirmed to clash at Sandown on Saturday, Dinoblue will top the betting for Tuesday's feature. Willie Mullins' mare has been in superb form this season, winning the Grade One at Leopardstown over Christmas, before recording back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Dublin Racing Festival and the Mares' Chase at Cheltenham.
Captain Guinness claimed a surprise victory in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham. Gentleman De Mee followed Rachael Blackmore's mount home in second that day, and both sit just behind Dinoblue in the current market.
Banbridge will drop back down to two miles, with the ground set to come up suitably good at Punchestown next week. Both Ash Tree Meadow and Appreciate It have been entered here and the Punchestown Gold Cup later in the week.
Willie Mullins could also be represented by Dysart Dynamo and Saint Sam in this Grade One. Fil Dor and Maskada round off the entries.
2024 Punchestown Champion Chase Tips
With that seven pound mares' allowance on her side, Dinoblue could be difficult to beat. Mark Walsh didn't give the favourite the best of rides when she was beaten at Cheltenham and the only horse to have beaten Dinoblue over two miles this term is El Fabiolo, who will run at Sandown instead.
On favourably good ground, I wouldn't be surprised to see Gentleman De Mee reverse the Champion Chase form with Captain Guinness. Henry De Bromhead's Cheltenham winner has been lapped on his two previous runs in this race and Gentleman De Mee usually does his best work in the spring.
On Racing Post Ratings, BANBRIDGE'S (9/2) victory in the Silviniaco Conti Chase is the best piece of seasonal form on offer. Joseph O'Brien's star was always going to struggle on soft ground in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham, and a mistake at the second flight put JJ Slevin's mount firmly on the back foot.
Although his Grade Two win at Kempton came over two-and-a-half miles, Banbridge has never looked short of two-mile speed. Good ground is crucial to Joseph's eight-year-old and conditions on Tuesday should be ideal. At 10/1, Banbridge was certainly the best value bet at the ante-post stage, and I still fancy him to win this race at 9/2.
