2025 Epsom Oaks Tips - Is Ryan on the wrong one at Epsom?

The 2025 Epsom Oaks promises another thrilling encounter as top fillies compete in this prestigious classic. Desert Flower is the early favorite following her triumph in the 1000 Guineas, but the market presents attractive alternatives. Minnie Hauk, Giselle, and Whirl are major contenders, with Whirl standing out after an impressive Musidora Stakes win. Aidan O'Brien's dominance in recent years makes his runners a significant threat, with Whirl potentially delivering a decisive performance. Soft ground could play a crucial role, favoring those with proven stamina.

The opening day of the Derby Festival is headlined by the fillies' equivalent of that famous Classic, the Epsom Oaks. The Oaks was actually created the year before the Epsom Derby back in 1779 and this year's renewal promises to be a thriller.

Here's our guide to the 2025 Epsom Oaks, including the latest odds, the full field and draw and our best betting tips.

2025 Epsom Oaks Runners

Desert Flower capped a stunning weekend for Godolphin by running out a ready winner of the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Charlie Appleby will now step his unbeaten filly up in trip for the first time and Desert Flower tops the market for the 2025 Epsom Oaks.

Aidan O'Brien has confirmed all three of his trial winners in this fillies' Classic. Cheshire Oaks winner, Minnie Hauk sits closest to Desert Flower in the market and is the chosen mount of Ryan Moore. Lingfield winner, Giselle and Musidora Stakes heroine, Whirl can also be backed at single-figure prices.

Elwateen has been supplemented into Friday's feature and looks ready for this step up in trip following a fourth-place finish in the 1000 Guineas. Qilin Queen held off Revoir to land the recent trial at Newbury and both could head on to the Oaks.

Joseph O'Brien could be represented by Wemighttakedlongway, who upset Catalina Delcarpio to score in the Salsabil Stakes at Leopardstown. Musidora Stakes third Go Go Boots is the ninth and final runner in this historic Classic.

2025 Epsom Oaks Tips

I'm in no hurry to back Desert Flower at such a short price. Charlie Appleby's filly might be the best horse in the race, but on breeding, she's by no means guaranteed to get the trip. Stall one could pose a problem too, and William Buick's mount will find it harder to see out the distance on soft ground.

I backed Revoir for this race at 33/1 in the off-season and was delighted with her reappearance effort at Newbury. There's plenty more to come from Ralph Beckett's filly and soft ground will suit. Revoir does, however, have some catching up to do on form and 12/1 isn't a particularly appealing each-way price.

All three of Aidan O'Brien's runners are more appealing to me than the market leader. Giselle is talented, but extremely quirky. Minnie Hauk is the chosen ride of Ryan Moore, which will ensure that she challenges Desert Flower for favouritism.

Aidan O'Brien has won this Classic six times since Ryan Moore became his number one jockey. However, Moore was only in the saddle for three of those victories, as Aidan's second-string won in 2021, 2018 and 50/1 outsider Qualify scored in 2015.

WHIRL (7/1) was the most impressive of Aidan's Classic trial winners. Ryan Moore's mount was weak in the betting going into the Musidora Stakes, but produced a dominant display, making most of the running before forging five lengths clear of her pursuers on the run to the line.

Wayne Lordan was in the saddle when Whirl beat Giselle and some other decent rivals in the Staffordstown Stud Stakes in October. O'Brien's filly showed great battling qualities that day, fighting back after being passed to claim Group Three glory on soft ground.

The Musidora is becoming the key trial for the Epsom Oaks and Whirl simply relished the extended trip at York. She's proven on British soil and on soft ground, which could be useful if the expected rain materialises. Lordan is no stranger to Classic success and he's more than good enough to navigate a wide draw in stall nine.
