The day before the Derby is run at Epsom, a field of fantastic fillies will take to the famous Downs to battle it out in the Epsom Oaks.

The final field for this year's renewal has been confirmed and eleven fillies will take their chance. We've given our guide a final update and picked out our Epsom Oaks selections.

2022 Epsom Oaks Runners

Two trainers have dominated the Oaks in the last decade. One of those is John Gosden, who's landed this Classic with Taghrooha, Enable and Anapurna during that time period.

Gosden didn't have a runner at Epsom in 2021, but he currently trains the top two contenders in the betting for this year's event. The even-money favourite is Emily Upjohn, who extended her unbeaten record with an emphatic triumph in the Musidora Stakes last time out.

With Frankie Dettori certain to side with Emily Upjohn, Hollie Doyle will renew her partnership with the second of Gosden's entrants, Nashwa. This daughter of Frankel followed an easy reappearance win at Haydock with a Listed victory at Newbury, where Nashwa saw off a modest field in comfortable fashion.

Six of the last ten renewals of the Oaks have gone the way of Aidan O'Brien and a large Ballydoyle contingent is sure to line up in this year's Oaks.

Tuesday and Concert Hall placed behind the impressive Homeless Songs in the Irish 1000 Guineas last time out, and both are bred to be better over this sort of trip. Thoughts Of June earned her spot in this Classic by winning the Cheshire Oaks. Aidan O'Brien will also run The Algarve, who could be asked to set the pace after being drawn in stall two.

Sitting amongst the Gosden and O'Brien runners at the head of the betting is Charlie Appleby's contender, With The Moonlight. William Buick's mount powered to an excellent five-length victory in the Pretty Polly Stakes on her three-year-old reappearance and she'll bid to hand Godolphin an overdue fourth win in this fillies' Classic.

Joseph O'Brien has booked Tom Marquand to ride recent Blue Wind Stakes winner, Tranquil Lady. Lingfield Trial winner, Rogue Millennium has been supplemented for Epsom and Tom Clover's runner has been drawn in stall 7.

Ralph Beckett - the only other trainer to have won the Oaks since 2011 - could be represented by Cheshire Oaks fourth, Moon De Vega. The final runner in the main event on day one of the Epsom Derby Festival is Ed Walker's Listed winner Kawida.

2022 Epsom Oaks Tips

Emily Upjohn looked every inch a possible Classic winner in the Musidora. This imposing daughter of former Derby winner, Sea The Stars looked an absolute picture in the paddock. Frankie Dettori's mount pulled hard for the first half of the race, but still have more than enough in the tank to find an extra gear over the final two furlongs and seal a six-length success.

Such was the dominance of that performance, some trainers may opt to swerve Emily Upjohn, resulting in a fairly small field for this year's Oaks. If that were to happen, then John Gosden's filly will likely go off as an odds-on favourite.

Taking evens about Emily Upjohn now may prove to be a smart decision. Personally, I prefer to look for a little more value at the ante-post stage.

Backing an Aidan O'Brien runner often pays off at Epsom. Minding and Qualify both won the Oaks after running in the Irish 1000 Guineas, so the quick turnaround wouldn't put me off backing either Tuesday or Concert Hall, who placed behind Homeless Songs in that Classic. Both are a little short for an each way bet at this stage, but I might be tempted into backing Tuesday, if she was still an 8/1 shot when the final field was confirmed.

With The Moonlight ran a storming trial in the Pretty Polly, I just fear this trip may prove too much of a stretch. I'd fancy Above The Curve to beat Thoughts Of June if they locked horns again, but she too isn't a guaranteed stayer over this distance.

One who will relish this step up to a mile-and-a-half is the second of Joseph O'Brien's entrants, TRANQUIL LADY. A half-sister to O'Brien's stable star State Of Rest, Tranquil Lady is out of top sire Australia, who won both the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby during his illustrious career on the track.

After finishing fourth behind Concert Hall on her reappearance in the Salsibil Stakes, Tranquil Lady was asked to prove her Classic credentials in the Blue Wind Stakes. Dylan Browne McMonagle's mount rose to her trainer's challenge brilliantly, surging four lengths clear of the Ballydoyle favourite in the closing stages.

The track at Naas is quite similar to Epsom Downs, with its undulations and the sweeping left-handed turn going into the home straight. Tranquil Lady travelled beautifully in the Blue Wind and was doing her best work on the uphill climb to the line.

Tranquil Lady has improved with each of her six career starts. She's bred to get even better as she matures and, based on that impressive Blue Wind success, stepping up to 12 furlongs will only accelerate her progression.

Verdict

Emily Upjohn will take a whole heap of beating. Yet, I was just as impressed with Tranquil Lady's recent victory at Naas and 14/1 is too good a price to pass up. Joseph O'Brien's contender will be my each way selection in the Epsom Oaks.
