What is the Nassau Stakes?

The Nassau Stakes is a historic horse race staged on the third day of Glorious Goodwood. This Group One is run over a trip of 10 furlongs, and provides three-year-olds fillies with an opportunity to take on their elders in Group One company.

Who won the Nassau Stakes?

Aidan O'Brien saddled another Nassau Stakes winner in 2025, as Epsom Oaks runner-up Whirl ran out an impressive winner from the front under Ryan Moore.

Which horses will run in the Nassau Stakes?

If Whirl stays in training as a four-year-old, she could return to Goodwood to try and defend her crown in 2026. Nassau Stakes History

The Nassau Stakes is one of the premier fillies and mares' races in Britain and it runs on the third day of the Glorius Goodwood carnival in July/August.

It was restricted to three-year-old fillies for the first 135 years and was given Group 1 status in 1999 when Saeed bin Suroor scored with Zahrat Dubai.

There have been many champions winners since, including Ouija Board, The Fugue, Minding and Winter.

Midday was a three-time from 2009-2011 and in the process proving itself as the best female middle-distance runner in the land.

Sir Michael Stoute scored three consecutive wins with three different horses from 2002-2004 and Henry Cecil, who has a total of eight wins in the race, scored three consecutive wins with Midday.

John Gosden followed suit when lining up The Fugue, Winsili and Legatissimo in consecutive years before Aidan O'Brien scored back-to-back victories with Minding and Winter.

It has long been a favourites race with 27 favourites winning the last 70 editions and the high-quality stables target their best fillies and mares for the Nassau Stakes.

Classic winner Legatissimo, Winter and Minding continued favourite's strong record between 2015 and 17. Charlie Appleby's Wild Illusion then won her second Group One in 2018.

Deirdre struck a blow for Japan when Mitsuru Hashida's raider claimed a shock win under Oisin Murphy in 2019. Aidan O'Brien's youngest son, Donnacha O'Brien then saddled his first Group One winner, as Fancy Blue struck in the 2020 Nassau Stakes.

In 2021, William Jarvis claimed the biggest win of his training career, as the popular Lady Bowthorpe won the Nassau Stakes.
