The 2026 2000 Guineas at Newmarket kicks off the British flat turf season with high expectations. Aidan O'Brien's Albert Einstein heads the betting odds, despite skepticism about his adaptability to the Rowley Mile. Alternatives like Bow Echo and Publish offer strong claims, yet are deemed slightly overvalued. Gewan, winner of the Dewhurst Stakes, presents a more attractive proposition at 10/1. Another standout is Distant Storm, noted for his potent finish in past races. Morris Dancer also emerges as a potential contender, showcasing impressive performance indicators under the guidance of William Buick.
The master of Ballydoyle has described his star juvenile as "the fastest horses we've ever had at Ballyboyle", and seemed to intimate that Albert Einstein would be his only representative at Newmarket - meaning Gstaad would be saved for the Curragh, and Puerto Rico would head to Longchamp.
Personally, I'm not buying all of the talk. If Albert Einstein is that rapid, then staying eight furlongs on a stiff track like the Rowley Mile isn't guaranteed. O'Brien's colt has been off the track since two quick appearances at the start of last season, and didn't race in any of the key juvenile contests. Aidan hasn't won the Guineas since 2019. I think there are plenty of reasons to take Albert Einstein on.
2026 2000 Guineas Ante-Post Tips
Bow Echo and Publish boast strong credentials, but seem a little short in the betting if you look at what they actually achieved. Gewan's price of 10/1 is much more appealing, considering he won the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in the autumn.
DISTANT STORM (16/1) finished third behind Gewan in the Dewhurst. Charlie Appleby's colt was held up and still sat last going into the dip. While he did pick up well once he hit the rising ground, William Buick's mount had far too much ground to make up, and crossed the line two lengths adrift of Andrew Balding's front-runner.
Hold-up tactics had worked a treat when Distant Storm bolted up in the Tattersalls Stakes. Appleby's colt had been far too fresh when he finished third behind Gewan in the Acomb Stakes, but settled well before powering to victory in September, and again settled nicely in the Dewhurst.
Night Of Thunder is an excellent sire and has spawned plenty of Classic winners. Distant Storm's dam has produced plenty of strong milers, all of which have seemed to improve with age. Despite a surprisingly poor winter in Dubai by his standard, Appleby has been the man to follow in recent renewals of the 2000 Guineas, and Distant Storm has to be regarded as a prime contender.

Another potential challenger in the blue silks of Godolphin is MORRIS DANCER (33/1). John and Thady Gosden's youngster looked good when winning his maiden at Haydock last May, and kept on gamely from off the pace to push future Grade One winner Zavateri within a head when the two met in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood.
William Buick's mount then took down A Bit Of Spirit to land the Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury. Only three horses took part in that Listed contest, which wouldn't be considered a breeding ground for Classic winners. Yet, Morris Dancer couldn't have been much more impressive when scoring by four lengths, and A Bit Of Spirit came out and won the Solario Stakes on his next start.
I expect Morris Dancer will run in one of the trials before a potential tilt at the 2000 Guineas. He's clearly got plenty of talent and has already proven his stamina over a mile. I wouldn't be surprised if this son of Palace Pier turned out to be a Guineas contender.
I really liked what Lifeplan did when winning the Gimcrack Stakes at York. On breeding, this son of Kodi Bear would be better suited to sprinting distances, but he shaped like more of a miler to me when landing that Group Two at York. If Declan Carroll's colt was to go down the Guineas route, I'd be interested.
Verdict
Charlie Appleby has won three of the last four editions of this Classic, and Distant Storm looks tailor-made for the 2000 Guineas.
Another strong contender for Godolphin could be Morris Dancer, who impressed during his juvenile campaign in 2025.
