Day two of the Future Champions Festival at Newmarket is headlined by the Dewhurst Stakes. This historic seven-furlong contest has been won by a whole host of future Classic winners, including Ormonde, Nijinsky, Mill Reef and Frankel.

2024 Dewhurst Stakes Entries
It'll be Coolmore vs Godolphin in Saturday's Dewhurst, with five of the six declared runners representing those powerhouse operations. The favourite remains The Lion In Winter, who was odds-on at one stage, but has drifted back out to Evens since the field was confirmed.
The favourite's ease in the market came after Shadow Of Light was supplemented for the race on Thursday. Charlie Appleby's star earned a mark of 119 after thrashing Whistlejacket in the Middle Park Stakes two weeks ago and Godolphin have decided to strike while the iron remains hot.
William Buick has opted to ride Shadow Of Light, leaving James Doyle to partner with Ancient Truth who, like The Lion In Winter, is unbeaten after three career starts. Aidan O'Brien also runs Everlasting, who only made a winning debut at the Curragh last weekend. Rock Of Cashel will likely be on pace-making duties.
The sixth and final runner is Hugo Palmer's Seagulls Eleven. Palmer's colt ran well to place in the Superlative Stakes and the National Stakes, despite still looking green and babyish in both races. With the ground softening slightly in his favour, he's not without a chance.
2024 Dewhurst Stakes Tips
I do like Seagulls Eleven. While it's clear he will be better as a three-year-old, he's got enough about him now to run well. However, Hugo Palmer's star is fighting against the tide somewhat and I'd be shocked if the winner didn't come from one of the top three in the market.
Following Shadow Of Light's Middle Park victory, Charlie Appleby said that he was done for the season and seemed to be leaning towards a sprint campaign in 2025. I was extremely surprised when the news broke of his supplementation - a move that indicates to me that Godolphin isn't entirely convinced about Ancient Truth, despite his unbeaten record.
With the two Godolphin runners drawn on the flanks, the Ballydoyle pacemakers could have the run of the race down the centre of the track and set the Dewhurst up for THE LION IN WINTER (Evens). O'Brien's colt cruised to victory on his debut over seven furlongs at the Curragh, before an even more impressive victory in the Acomb Stakes at York.
Ryan Moore went to give his mount a clip a couple of times, fearing he may start to idle at the front. With a furlong to travel, Moore put the stick down, knowing his strong-staying mount had that Group Three in the bag. The form of the Acomb has been boosted significantly too, with runner-up Wimbledon Hawkeye and fourth-placed The Waco Kid both landing Group prizes on the Rowley Mile since.
Despite my confidence that he's the best horse in the race, I won't be backing The Lion In Winter with a single bet at even-money. However, odds of 5/1 about the Futurity Trophy seem generous, considering he's Aidan O'Brien's top juvenile colt and would have no trouble seeing out a mile at Doncaster.
