2024 Fillies' Mile News - Quotes From Connections

Charlie Appleby (Desert Flower)

I’m pleased with her and she’s a filly who is three from three. Listening to people on the day, I think people thought there was going to be this big ‘wow’ factor at Doncaster. But she’s a filly who is still learning and you saw her pricking her ears there when she got to the front.

She’s a filly who is going to get better with the more experience she gets, and experience is going to become more valuable as she keeps climbing the ladder.

It’s very English to not want to get beat, but I don’t mind mine getting beat. She hasn’t been beat but she had to race a bit more at Doncaster and the odd time they do get beat, they learn plenty from it – when you are heading into Group Ones or Classics, I don’t think there is any harm in it.

Hopefully on Friday she will put herself bang there as being one of the leading Guineas contenders for next year.

Ryan Moore (January)

We run three here and they are all exciting prospects. January is a filly I've always liked and her win in the Churchill Stakes at Tipperary showed her potential. We obviously have to overturn a 1½l defeat to Desert Flower in the May Hill, that will be hard, but my filly is tough and will give the favourite plenty to think about.

We also run Dreamy who is another filly I like. She is two for two and was very strong to the line in her win at the Curragh last day.

Our third filly in the race, Ballet Slippers, handled the soft ground well at Ascot last month and any rain wouldn't be an issue for her. Desert Flower set the standard though.

Ralph Beckett (Tabiti)

The drop back to six wouldn’t have suited her (In the Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes), neither would the tacky ground, so she has won against the curve really.

She’s a good filly, I hope, and she’s shown she’s a good filly by winning that, but I hope we can go on to even bigger things. She’s going in the right direction and it’s terrific.

We will aim high and I hope she will progress into a really nice filly at a mile next year.

James Savage (Anna Swan)

There’s plenty of stamina in her family. William was very complimentary about her and she showed she's versatile with the ground.
