An ante-post selection for the Ebor Handicap, which takes place at York on August 24th.

One of the biggest handicaps of the flat racing season takes place at York at the end of next month, as a classy field contests the Ebor Handicap on the final day of the Ebor Festival. I've been lucky enough to tip the winner of the Ebor twice in the last four years and I've picked out a runner in this race who warrants an early bet.

24/8/24 York Ebor Handicap - My Mate Mozzie

Six of the last ten renewals of the Ebor have been won by Irish horses, so it's no surprise to see raiders dominating the ante-post market. Belloccio is the favourite, following a five-pound rise for his impressive win in the Copper Horse Handicap. Dermot Weld's Harbour Wind could make his handicap debut at York, with Ethical Diamond likely to represent last year's winning trainer, Willie Mullins.

The raider who interests me most is MY MATE MOZZIE (16/1), whose effort at Royal Ascot was the exact opposite of what I expected.

Gavin Cromwell's star has always been a powerful traveller, but is usually found wanting in the finish. In the Copper Horse Handicap, Gary Carroll was hard at work on his mount turning for home, but My Mate Mozzie found plenty late in the piece, and might even have run down Belloccio had the finishing line come 200 yards later.

16 of the last 17 winners of the Ebor were aged between four and six. However, My Mate Mozzie isn't your typical eight-year-old. Cromwell's gelding has only run nine times in flat races, recording career-best RPRs in each of his three most recent appearances.

Carroll's mount received a two-pound rating hike for that third-place finish at Royal Ascot, meaning he'll enter this handicap off a mark of 98. 111-rated Alsakib and Tashkhan are the highest-rated runners in the field, and their inclusion would leave My Mate Mozzie shouldering something around the 9-00 mark.

Cromwell's star will head to Galway for a handicap hurdle at the start of August and a good effort there should put My Mate Mozzie spot on for a tilt at the Ebor.

Verdict

2024 Ebor Handicap

My Mate Mozzie ran an excellent race at Royal Ascot and his style of racing should suit York nicely. Gavin Cromwell's star will head to the Galway Festival first, and a solid effort there would see his odds for the Ebor evaporate quickly. 16/1 is a good ante-post price.
