2026 Belmont Stakes Tips - Will a new star Emerge at Saratoga?

The 2026 Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the US Triple Crown, takes place at Saratoga over a shorter 1¼-mile distance. With Derby runners returning and a slower pace expected, Emerging Market (8/1) is tipped as the main beneficiary, particularly if front-running tactics are employed. The market is led by Renegade, with Golden Tempo and Chief Wallabee also in contention. However, our recommendation is to back Emerging Market for the win, with a suggested trifecta of Emerging Market, Renegade, and Commandment. Watch the event live via the dedicated stream page.

The final leg of the US Triple Crown takes place on Saturday, as a field of talented three-year-olds takes part in the Belmont Stakes. This historic race will again be staged at Saratoga before Belmont Park reopens in September, meaning this Classic will be run over a shorter distance of a mile-and-a-quarter.

Here's our free guide to the 2026 Belmont Stakes, including our best betting tips.

2026 Belmont Stakes Runners

Having skipped the Preakness Stakes, most of the big guns from this year's Kentucky Derby will run it back in the Preakness Stakes. Golden Tempo came from the rear to win that Classic, and Cherie DeVaux's new star sits third in the betting at Belmont.

Topping the market is Kentucky Derby runner-up Renegade, who was blindsided by Golden Tempo, having looked the most likely winner at Churchill Downs. Chief Wallabee was only beaten three lengths when third in the Kentucky Derby, and Bill Mott's star splits the top two in the market.

Florida Derby winner Commandment will be looking to make amends after only finishing seventh in the Derby. Emerging Market takes on the leading contenders again after a tenth-place finish at Churchill Downs, on what was just his third appearance on the racecourse.

Growth Equity will step up into Group One company for the first time, following his victory in the Peter Pan Stakes. Ottinho returns to the track after his runner-up finish in the Blue Grass Stakes. Vitruvian Man and Power Shift complete the field.

2026 Belmont Stakes Tips

I stated in my Kentucky Derby preview that backing closers was the way to go. The pace in the Derby is always too fast early on, as horses often get carried away, and it was the Japanese and Arabian raiders who took the field along at an unsustainable pace at Churchill Downs.

Inevitably, the pace collapsed, and the hold up horses came to the fore late on. Golden Tempo was the last to make his move, and came out on top, ahead of Renegade, who endured a fairly rough trip from stall one.

Of the two, there' no doubt in my mind that Renegade is the better horse. I can't see the pace on Saturday being anywhere near as fast as it was in the Derby, which certainly won't suit Golden Tempo. I struggle to see how he's going to claim back-to-back Classics.

It's actually quite hard to figure out who will make the running in Saturday's feature. Will Vitruvian Man go forward from stall one? Will Chief Wallabee show early from a low stall? Could Growth Equity be the one charged with making the running?

EMERGING MARKET (8/1) would be the main beneficiary if stablemate Growth Equity was charged with front-running duties. Flavien Prat tracked the leaders when winning on debut at Tampa Bay in February, and executed similar tactics when landing the Louisiana Derby.

Chad Brown then threw Emerging Market into the Kentucky Derby on just his third career start. Prat just behind the leaders in the early stages, but that turned out to be the worst position of all, as the pacesetter fell back into Emerging Market's lap. To his credit, I thought Brown's colt boxed on fairly well along the rail, and Emerging Market was only beaten eight lengths when crossing the line in tenth place.

With a much more sedate early gallop all but guaranteed at Saratoga, a prominent early position could be just what the doctor ordered. Golden Tempo, Renegade, Chief Wallabee and Commandment all like to be held up, and a slow pace won't suit their style of running.  Emerging Market clearly has plenty of ability, and there's a good chance that he's improved again for that run at Churchill Downs.
