Arc Analysis

I'm not sure this is the best Arc that we've ever seen, but it does present an intriguing puzzle from a betting standpoint. I had intended on putting up Croix Du Nord as my main selection, as the long-term weather forecast for Longchamp suggested that the ground might not be very soft - which is often the sticking point for Japanese raiders attempting to win on French soil.

However, the weather predictions changed dramatically at the start of this week, and the going at Longchamp on Sunday is now expected to be soft. Croix Du Nord was then drawn out in the car park when the draw was made on Thursday - a further hammer blow to his once bright prospects.

Estrange was withdrawn after being drawn widest of all in stall 18 - although connections claimed she was "coughing" on Thursday evening. Giavellotto beat former favourite Kalpana on his prep-run for the Arc at Kempton. He's a horse who relishes decent ground, though, so it remains to be seen whether he'll take his chance on Sunday.

Daryz and Cualificar have been cut in the betting since landing kind draws, but I'm not convinced that this year's crop of three-year-old colts - in Britain, Ireland or France - are particularly good. Kalpana has shirked it once too often in a battle this season to earn my vote, while the likes of Los Angeles, White Birch and Hotazhell hold little appeal, even at lengthy prices.

As for the other Japanese raiders, Byzantine Dream didn't fare much better than Croix Du Nord in Thursday's draw - Oisin Murphy will have his work cut out from stall 15 - and Alohi Alii's stamina has to be questioned, especially on soft ground. Sosie's best chance of winning probably came last year when he had that three-year-old allowance on his side, and Quisisana will have to raise her game considerably to get involved.

2025 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Tip 1 - Gezora

Fillies have an excellent recent record in the Arc, and the gentler sex holds all of the aces going into Sunday's renewal.

Minnie Hauk seems to have the strongest chance. Yet, stall one can be tricky if Aidan O'Brien's filly doesn't get off to a swift start, and she's a little short in the betting for my liking. Aventure isn't drawn particularly well in 12 and she too is quite short in the market, but last year's runner-up clearly has an excellent chance. If either were to drift on the day, I'd probably take a punt.

Going into the Prix Vermeille that Aventure won, I put GEZORA (18/1) up for the Arc at 20/1. Francis-Henri Graffard didn't enter his filly in this historic race at the beginning of the season, but Gezora earned her entry by winning the Prix de Diane, having taken down stablemate Audobon Park on her previous start in the Prix Saint-Alary.

Given it was her first crack at the Arc distance, I was quite pleased with Gezora's effort in the Prix Vermeille. Mickael Barzalona's mount was keen enough early, on fairly fast ground which wouldn't have suited. Aventure got first run on Gezora, and although she managed to maintain that advantage to the line, Graffard's filly stuck to her coattails well to finish second.

Graffard has said all season long that genuinely soft autumn ground will bring out the best in Gezora, and I thought she saw out the trip well. Stall 13 isn't ideal, but Graffard's horses could hardly be running any better going into the Arc meeting, and Gezora is an improving three-year-old with strong Group One form to her name.

2025 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Tip 2 - Aventure

Support for Minnie Hauk since Thursday's draw has seen Aidan O'Brien's filly establish herself as the clear favourite for this afternoon's Arc. However, that move has made AVENTURE'S (5/1) current price more appealing, and I'm going to add last year's runner-up to my selections.

Christophe Ferland's filly twice bumped into Bluestocking around Longchamp last year. First, Aventure suffered a narrow defeat to Ralph Beckett's raider in the Prix Vermeille, before repeating those placings in the Arc itself, where Maxime Guyon might have left his challenge a little too late.

Aventure's form this term suggests that she has improved between three and four. Ferland took a softly-softly approach early in the season, allowing his filly to win two lesser races. Aventure then ran a solid race in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, finishing second to classy gelding Calandagan, who went on to win the King George at Ascot.

Again, Guyon and Aventure took in the Prix Vermeille en route to the Arc. Ferland's stable star ran out a clear winner over Gezora - proving she could give some weight to talented three-year-old fillies - and that performance will fill connections with plenty of confidence going into this afternoon's main event.
