2023 Champion Stayers' Hurdle Runners
Leading the way in the betting is Gordon Elliott's Teahupoo, who continued his fine season with a third-place finish in the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham. Klassical Dream is the defending two-time champion at Punchestown and Paul Townend's mount has been backed into second in the market.
Willie Mullins will also be represented by Monkfish and Asterion Forlonge, who fought out the finish to a Grade Two at Fairyhouse earlier this month. Gordon Elliott will again run Sire Du Berlais, who will attempt to complete an audacious treble, having struck at Cheltenham and Aintree already this spring.
Jessica Harrington will be represented by Ashdale Bob, with Rachael Blackmore and Henry De Bromhead teaming up with Summerville Boy. Oliver McKiernan will run Aintree fourth Meet And Greet. A fourth Willie Mullins runner, Whatdeawant completes the field.
2023 Champion Stayers' Hurdle Tips
I backed Teahupoo at Cheltenham and I'm convinced that Gordon Elliott's charge will be the star of this division next season. Teahupoo has, however, performed poorly at the Punchestown Festival in each of the last two seasons and the drying ground will not be to his advantage.
Klassical Dream would only run here a Punchestown if he could and the defending champion is greatly respected. Mullins' charge came into last year's race on the back of a mere five-length defeat in the Stayers' Hurdle and could only beat Ashdale Bob by a length. This time, Klassical Dream has a dismal, 34-length loss at Cheltenham to overcome and he looks fairly skinny in the betting at 3/1.
If Sire Du Berlais could complete the Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown treble at the age of 11, then Gordon Elliott should be handed the Champion Trainer trophy immediately. Personally, I can't see it happening, but it would be an incredible sight to behold.
The bounce factor has to come into play for Monkfish, who ran a screamer on his return from a lengthy absence at Fairyhouse. Ashdale Bob's light went out so quickly at Cheltenham, that something must have been amiss. Summerville Boy has to step his game up massively and Meet And Greet had a tough race at Aintree just 12 days ago.
I'm going to keep the faith with ASTERION FORLONGE, who was my NAP of the day when he beat Monkfish at Fairyhouse 17 days ago. Willie Mullins' grey made a few errors that day, but comfortably held his stablemate at bay on the run to the line to claim his first victory in almost two years.
Asterion Forlonge was kept back with a spring campaign in mind and improved greatly for his reappearance run behind Summerville Boy at Thurles. Patrick Mullins' mount bolted up in a handicap chase on his only previous outing at the Punchestown Festival and stepping back up to three miles has to be a positive.
Verdict
This looks like an extremely open race to me and I wouldn't be surprised to see Asterion Forlonge run a blinder. He offers plenty of value at 10/1.
