The feature race of the Punchestown Festival takes place on day two, as many of the sport's best chasers do battle in the Punchestown Gold Cup. This Grade One has been won by legends like Arkle during it's history and Galopin Des Champs will carry a very short price into this year's renewal.

2023 Punchestown Gold Cup Entries
Galopin Des Champs made it six wins from seven starts over fences at the Cheltenham Festival last month, kicking seven lengths clear of Bravemansgame after the final flight to hand Willie Mullins his third Gold Cup. Paul Townend's mount returned a price of 2/9 when winning the John Durkan here at Punchestown earlier in the season and the bookies make Galopin Des Champs a similar price to claim his seventh Grade One victory.
Bravemansgame will travel over to Punchestown to renew rivalries with his Gold Cup conquerer. Paul Nicholls' charge has produced his best performances around the right-handed track at Kempton and Nicholls is no stranger to success in this Grade One, so Bravemansgame has to be respected.
Ryanair Chase winner Envoi Allen will step back up to three miles on his final outing of the season. Shark Hanlon will be represented by Hewick, who fell at the second-last in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Fury Road is turned out quickly, following an early fall in the Grand National. Martin Brassil's Ultima runner-up, Fastorslow completes the field for Wednesday's feature race at the Punchestown Festival.
2023 Punchestown Gold Cup Tips
Despite a fairly poor record during the spring, I really fancied Bravemansgame to run well in the Gold Cup. Paul Nicholls had his star fully teed up for the task and Harry Cobden's mount did run a blinder - which still wasn't good enough to beat Galopin Des Champs.
If Aintree was a bit of an afterthought for Bravemansgame, then Punchestown certainly is. While this shorter trip and the right-handed track will definitely suit, I simply cannot see Paul Nicholls' raider turning the tables on the odds-on favourite.
Barring some sort of calamity, Galopin Des Champs will extend his perfect record at this meeting to three-from-three. Given his price, I'll delve into the "betting without the favourite" for my selection, where I'm going to take Bravemansgame on with ENVOI ALLEN.
Having kicked off this season with another victory at Down Royal, Envoi Allen bounced back from a shocking run in the King George by winning the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham. Rachael Blackmore's mount made some errors early on, but warmed to his task brilliantly and comfortably repelled Shishkin on the run to the line.
Punchestown hasn't been the happiest of hunting ground for Envoi Allen in recent seasons. Yet, given the Grade One-winning form he brings to the table, and the form of Henry De Bromhead's yard, I'd be surprised if Envoi Allen didn't finish as the best of the rest behind Galopin Des Champs.
Verdict
It would be a huge shock if Galopin Des Champs succumbed to defeat, so I'm going to back Envoi Allen in the "betting without the favourite" special market.
