The opening day of the Punchestown Festival is headlined by the Punchestown Champion Chase. This two-mile Grade One has been won by many of National Hunt racing's finest chasers and Energumene will attempt to become the seventh two-time winner of this great event.

2023 Punchestown Champion Chase Entries
Following a shock defeat in the Clarence House Chase, Energumene bounced back to top form with a sparkling victory in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham. Willie Mullins' star will now attempt to defend another title he won last season and the bookmakers make Energumene long odds-on to secure back-to-back victories in Tuesday's main event.
Willie Mullins will also run Grade One winner's Gentleman De Mee and Blue Lord. 2021 winner Chacun Pour Soi could drop back down to two miles, following a third-place finish over three miles at Cork last time out.
Captain Guinness kept on well to finish second behind Energumene at Cheltenham and he'll renew rivalries with the favourite at Punchestown. Henry De Bromhead has also entered up the mare Magic Daze, who refused to take part in the Mares' Chase at Cheltenham. Patrick Foley's Rebel Gold is the seven and final entrant at the Punchestown Festival.
I doubt whether Mark Walsh's mount has the quality to beat a fully firing Energuemene, but if the favourite did have an off-day, Gentleman De Mee could give the market leader something to worry about.
2023 Punchestown Champion Chase Tips
Energumene reaffirmed his position as the best two-mile chaser around with another flawless performance in the Champion Chase. The winner was favoured by the soft ground conditions, but connections knew that the defending champion was back to his best beforehand and I doubt the result would have been any different on quicker going.
Willie Mullins' star handled good ground well as he romped to victory in this race 12 months ago and it's likely we'll see a similarly emphatic performance on Tuesday. There's no value backing the market leader at 2/5, however, so I'll be having a small bet on the good-ground-loving GENTLEMAN DE MEE.
Having endured a tough start to the season, Mullins' seven-year-old bounced back to winning form at the Dublin Racing Festival, where he thrashed Blue Lord to win the Dublin Chase by seven lengths. That victory extended Gentleman De Mee's second-half of the season record to five victories from seven starts, compared to zero wins from seven starts in either October, November or December.

Verdict
Energumene will take the power of beating on Tuesday. If something was to happen to the favourite, then Gentleman De Mee is the most likely runner to take advantage, so I'll have a cautious punt on the second-favourite.
