This Grade One has been won by legends like Arkle during it's history and Clan Des Obeaux will attempt to become just the second back-to-back winner in the race's history.

2022 Punchestown Gold Cup Entries
Clan Des Obeaux saw off Al Boum Photo to hand Paul Nicholls his third Punchestown Gold Cup 12 months ago. Like last year, Clan Des Obeaux travels over to Ireland in winning form, having beaten Conflated and Kemboy to retain his crown in the Aintree Bowl.
Topping the market we find Allaho, who was last seen retaining his crown in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham. Willie Mullins' is the second-highest rated chaser in the sport and has only tasted defeat once in his last six starts.
Minella Indo and Galvin finished second and fourth respectively in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham and could round off their seasons with a run at Punchestown. JP McManus will be represented by dual Melling Chase winner, Fakir D'Oudairies and Janidil, who was last seen falling at Fairyhouse two weeks ago.
Willie Mullins will also run Al Boum Photo and former winner, Kemboy. King George winner, Tornado Flyer rounds off the Punchestown Festival entries.
2022 Punchestown Gold Cup Tips
Clan Des Obeaux came into this race last year on the back of a career-best victory at Aintree, and narrowly got the better of Al Boum Photo. Paul Nicholls' raider hasn't been as impressive this season and there's no doubting this year's renewal of the Punchestown Gold Cup is much deeper. I fear Harry Cobden's mount may have his work cut out.
Minella Indo returned to form with a solid second in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham and he's greatly respected. As is Galvin, who didn't jump fluently at Cheltenham but stayed on up the hill to finish fourth.
Both come into this race with much stronger three-mile form than market leader ALLAHO. Yet, this feels the perfect time for Willie Mullins to step his star back up in trip and I fancy Allaho will take plenty of beating.
Of the four most likely winners, Allaho has enjoyed the easiest campaign. Mullins' charge managed to win the John Durkan, despite looking fairly rusty. Allaho then cruised to victory at Thurles before retaining his Ryanair chase crown without breaking a sweat.
Willie has been reluctant to step Galopin Des Champs beyond two-and-a-half-miles during his novice season. If Mullins continues to campaign his star over that trip next season, then races like the John Durkan and Ryanair Chase will be on his agenda.
I highly doubt whether Willie will want to race Allaho and Galopin Des Champs against one another. So, if Allaho were to win this Grade One, then I wouldn't be surprised if he was taken down the King George, Irish Gold Cup and Cheltenham Gold Cup route during 2022/23.
Verdict
The time is right to step Allaho up to three miles and I'm firmly in the favourite's corner, while his price remains appealing.
