The sale of Palladium, a National Hunt horse, has set a new record, fetching an astounding €1.4 million. Purchased by Nicky Henderson and his collaborators, Palladium was previously known for a significant win in the German Derby. As a descendant of Gleneagles with an impressive pedigree and a half-brother to successful racehorse Panjari, Palladium's high price was anticipated. Lady Bamford facilitated the bid, with Nicky Henderson preparing the horse for the 2024 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, where current odds are 14/1.

The record sale for a National Hunt horse was smashed this weekend, as Nicky Henderson and owners went to €1.4 million to snap up Palladium.

Palladium made the headlines in his home country back in July, when claiming a surprise victory in the German version of the Derby. On his final start for Henk Grewe, this son of Gleneagles finished six lengths behind Rebels Romance in the Preis von Europa.

Gleneagles is no stranger to success over jumps, with several of his progeny reaching marks in the 140s over obstacles. Palladium is also a half-brother to Panjari, who bolted up in the Scottish Supreme Novices' Hurdle for Paul Nicholls' last season.

Before this weekend's Arqana sale, the most any British trainer paid for a National Hunt horse was the £650,000 sum Paul Nicholls and owner Chris Giles stumped up to purchase Regent's Stroll last July.

The £1.4m bid was entered on behalf of Lady Bamford, a Classic-winning owner on the flat. Together with her daughter Alice, Lady Bamford has had a number of horses in training with Nicky Henderson down the years, including First Street and Mister Coffey.

Upon receiving the news that he will now be training a one-and-a-half million pound three-year-old, Nicky Henderson handed Palladium an entry in next year's Triumph Hurdle, with bet365 listing Henderson's recruit as a 14/1 shot for the opener on day one of the Cheltenham Festival.
