"Hopefully he'll show how good he is again" - Field Of Gold ready for Champions Day assignment
Field Of Gold is poised for a comeback at the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day, hoping to rebound from a lackluster performance at the Sussex Stakes. After recovering from injury, he returns to the track as a favorite. John and Thady Gosden's training has put him in strong form, with expectations high for the dual Group 1 winner to perform well. Racing manager Barry Mahon is optimistic about Field Of Gold's condition, emphasizing that all focus is on the upcoming race at Ascot.

Field Of Gold will carry the tag of favouritism in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day, having been off the track since a disappointing showing at Glorious Goodwood.
John and Thady Gosden's dazzling grey went into the Sussex Stakes as the overwhelming favourite. Field Of Gold romped to victory in the Craven on his reappearance, and made up for a near-miss in the 2000 Guineas by claiming commanding victories in both the Irish Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes.
Few expected an upset in the Sussex Stakes, but what materialised seemed more like a miracle. 150/1 outsider Qirat - supplemented into the race to make the running for Field Of Gold - held the entire field at bay, with the odds-on favourite trailing across the line a well-beaten fourth.
Field Of Gold was found to be lame following that flop, and has been given the best part of three months to recover. On Saturday, Juddmonte's flagbearer will return to the track and their racing manager, Barry Mahon provided a fitness update.
"The horse is in great nick and he's had a good break since Goodwood. He's back in good form." Mahon said on Thursday.
"John and Thady (Gosden, joint-trainers) are both happy with him and he's finished his last bit of work this morning and everything went well, so it's all systems go for Ascot.
"It's the final big one of the European Flat season for milers. Hopefully he'll show how good he is again. He's a dual Group 1 winner and he was very impressive in Ireland and at Ascot. He likes the track and the ground should be fair for everyone."
When asked whether this would be Field Of Gold's final outing before heading into the stallion ranks, Mahon gave the safe answer.
"I don't know. The owners will very much decide that. There hasn't been any discussion about it either way."
"Come Saturday afternoon, stroke Sunday, we can sit down and make a plan from there, but everything is geared very much towards Ascot. The Breeders' Cup does come very quick after it, so we'll have to wait and see on that one."
Field Of Gold will face 15 rivals in the 2025 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, including top four-year-olds Rosallion and Fallen Angel. You can find all of our free tips for Champions Day here on our website. Our selections will go live on Friday.
