Grand National Festival Day 3 Tips

Race 1 - Maghull Novices' Chase Tips

JONBON (4/11) is the best horse in this race. He won at Aintree last season following a runner-up finish at Cheltenham and I expect Nicky Henderson's star to do the same on Saturday. I won't be backing Jonbon at 4/11, but I don't want to bet against him either.

Race 2 - Village Hotels Handicap Hurdle Tips

Good Time Jonny, West Balboa and Outlaw Peter will have to run off five-pound higher marks following impressive victories on their most recent runs. AN TAILLIUR (8/1), however, will run off the same mark he carried to sixth in last month's Pertemps Final.

Nothing went right for Jonjo O'Neill's grey at the Cheltenham Festival. An Tailliur ran keen and was shuffled back in the field at a crucial stage. Just as Jonjo Jnr's mount was building up a head of steam, An Tailliur put in a poor jump at the last and could only stay on to finish sixth. Considering that was his first run since October, there's every chance that O'Neill's seven-year-old will come on for that outing. He looks to have a decent chance.

As does Oliver McKiernan's GATSBY GREY (20/1), despite an underwhelming run at Leopardstown last time out. Philip Enright's mount finished a four-length second behind Mighty Potter in the Grade One Novices' Hurdle at Punchestown last spring and proved he could see out three miles with a cracking effort under top-weight in the Pertemps Qualifier at Leopardstown's Christmas Festival.

Gatsby Grey will be running off a slightly inflated English mark of 141, but I see no reason why this classy, progressive stayer won't vastly outrun his current odds.

Race 3 - Mersey Novices' Hurdle Tips

Most bookies are currently 4/1 the field for this wide-open Grade One. Hermes Allen leads Dark Raven and You Wear It Well in the betting, but neither of the three appeals to me at their current prices.

I'll have a risky bet on BLOW YOUR WAD (20/1), who ran a blinder to finish fourth in the Grade Two bumper at this meeting 12 months ago, despite lugging badly towards the centre of the track down the straight.

Following a disappointing run on unsuitably soft ground in the Tolworth, Tom Lacey's star bounced back to winning form with an impressive handicap triumph at Newbury three weeks ago, beating the classy Inneston by three lengths. Stan Sheppard's mount saw out two-and-a-half miles really well that day and there's clearly more to come from this progressive five-year-old.

Race 4 - Liverpool Hurdle Tips

Flooring Porter, Sire Du Berlais and Home By The Lee bring the best three mile form to the table and all three are greatly respected. That being said, MARIE'S ROCK (4/1) remains completely unexposed over this distance and I'm willing to forgive Nicky Henderson's mare for that lacklustre showing at Cheltenham.

Nicky Henderson said during the build-up that he wanted to run Marie's Rock in the Stayers' Hurdle. Owners, Middleham Park decided to return to the Mares' Hurdle, but it was clear from a very early stage that Marie's Rock wasn't on a going day. Nico De Boinville's mount jumped sloppily throughout and was still pulling hard with half-a-mile to go, which would explain her unexpectedly limp finish to the race.

Marie's Rock excelled on good ground last spring and I'm not worried about her stamina in the slightest. With that handy sex allowance on her side, I'm expecting a much more competitive showing from the current market leader.

Race 5 - William Hill Handicap Chase Tips

On the back of two excellent efforts around Cheltenham earlier in the season, I really fancied MIDNIGHT RIVER (6/1) to win the Plate Handicap Chase last month. Harry Skelton gave his mount a strange ride, holding his position out wide from well off the pace throughout and Midnight River simply never got involved in the contest.

This seems like the ideal opportunity to step Midnight River up to three miles, a trip I'm sure he'll relish. Dan Skelton has also fitted a tongue-tie for the first time and better ground on Grand National day is sure to suit.

Race 7 - Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race Tips

Fergal O'Brien's prowess with bumper runners was advertised at Aintree on Thursday, as O'Brien's saddled the first and fourth in the mares equivalent of this bumper.

O'Brien and Paddy Brennan will team up GO TO WAR (20/1), who ran out an impressive winner on his sole start at Uttoxeter back in October. Runner-up, Fingle Bridge has boosted that form with an 18-length victory of his own since and Fergal has clearly had Aintree in mind for this talented son of Soldier Of Fortune.
