Royal Ascot 2023 Day 5 Tips

Race 1 - Chesham Stakes Tips

Having gone the last two years without having a winner, Aidan O'Brien will be keen to add a seventh Chesham Stakes to his resume. Two Ballydoyle runners sit prominently in the betting, with Ryan Moore opting to ride PEARLS AND RUBIES (9/4)

This daughter of No Nay Never must have been showing plenty of pace on the gallops at Ballydoyle for O'Brien to send her out over five furlongs on debut. Pearls And Rubies' dam is Diamondsandrubies, who won the Cheshire Oaks for O'Brien in 2015 before going on to win the Irish Oaks.

Moore held his newcomer up at the rear at Navan, coming with a withering late run to snatch the spoils under the shadow of the post. Stepping up in trip is only going to help Pearls And Rubies and the stable confidence behind this filly is encouraging.

Race 2 - Jersey Stakes Tips

Back at the scene of his incredible debut success last term, HOLLOWAY BOY (11/1) represents good each-way value in this wide-open Jersey Stakes. Karl Burke's star became the first debutante to win the Chesham Stakes since 1996, producing a power-packed performance to return an SP of 40/1.

Although he hasn't managed to win since then, Holloway Boy proved that victory was no fluke with placed efforts in the Vintage, Tatterstall and Autumn Stakes, before placing third in the Vertem Trophy on his final juvenile start. Burke's star could only finish ninth on his reappearance in the 2000 Guineas, but dropping back down in grade and trip will suit, as will the quicker ground at Ascot.

Race 4 - Hardwicke Stakes Tips

Hukum is the outstanding candidate, but fast ground has to be a worry for a big, heavy horse who's had his injury problems. Free Wind has never faced colts of this caliber before. Deauville Legend has to step up on his four-year-old reappearance and the Pyledriver team could be using this Group Two as a prep-run for the King George, which he won so brilliantly 12 months ago.

I've tentatively come down on the side of WEST WIND BLOWS (20/1), a horse that Simon and Ed Crisford have always held in high regard. A Group Three winner at three, West Wind Blows was backed into Evens ahead of Hurricane Lane in the recent Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket, but could only finish third on the day as Charlie Appleby's former Classic winner returned to top form.

Jamie Spencer's mount limbered up for Royal Ascot with an impressive Group Three triumph at Longchamp last time out, where West Wind Blows didn't really beat much, but got the job done impressively. He's got the raw ability to hit the frame.

Race 5 - Wokingham Stakes Tips

A high draw is generally better than a low one on the straight track at Ascot and the two I like for the Wokingham have landed favourable draws. FIRST FOLIO (25/1) was only beaten four lengths off this mark 12 months ago and I could see James Ferguson's sprinter going even closer this year.

First Folio won well at Yarmouth under Taylor Fisher in September, but hasn't shown much form since. On his day, First Folio is a very capable handicapper and he'll have Fisher's five-pound claimer on his side once again.

Another dangerous sprinter running off a workable mark is SAINT LAWRENCE (25/1), who'll be having his first start for multiple Royal Ascot winning-trainer, Archie Watson.

Saint Lawrence has shown ability throughout his career, and even managed to finish sixth in last year's King's Stand Stakes. Inconsistency has hampered his progress, but there's no doubt that Hollie Doyle's mount is well-treated running off a mark of just 100 and being drawn up in stall 30 could be ideal.

Race 6 - Golden Gates Stakes Tips

The three runnings of this handicap have all been won by a lightly-raced, unexposed colt who came out of a double-figure stall. One who fits that profile this time around is Irish raider CUBAN DAWN (22/1), who'll be ridden by Hollie Doyle.

Jim Bolger thought enough of this Teofilo colt to run him in a Listed race first time out and Cuban Dawn wasn't beaten all that far when fourth behind the classy Paddington. Bolger's colt has finished a close second to two Dermot Weld colts in one mile maidens since. Those defeats see Cuban Dawn make his handicap debut off an attractive mark of 91 and he's certainly bred to improve for this step up in distance.

Race 7 - Queen Alexandra Stakes Tips

Irish horses dominate the betting for the final race of Royal Ascot, where William Buick and Stratum will be looking to complete a famous hat trick.

Willie Mullins' star has reached the grand old age of ten and didn't perform particularly well under Frankie Dettori at Leopardstown last time out. I would rather side with DAWN RISING (10/3), who finished a good third in that Group Three on his return to flat racing.

Formerly trained by Aidan O'Brien, Dawn Rising won a Grade Three Novice Hurdle and finished third in a Grade One for Joseph O'Brien last season. With none of his father's runners in the field, Joseph has secured the services of this week's star jockey, Ryan Moore and owner, JP McManus will be eyeing up his first winner at the Royal meeting.
