2024 Breeders' Cup Classic Runners
I've been watching US dirt racing for some time now, and I don't think there is a superstar hidden in this crop of stateside three-year-olds.
Fierceness brings the best form to that table, but his running style can lead to complete blow-outs, as we saw in the Kentucky Derby. Sierra Leone is also hampered by his style of racing. Chad Brown's star comes from so far off the pace, he needs everything to work out perfectly to land the spoils.
Highland Falls took advantage of a pace collapse when winning a particularly weak renewal of the Jockey Club Gold Cup. I don't think either Tapit Trice or Newgate are really top class. Arthur's Ride isn't a reliable front-runner and Senor Buscador, like Sierra Leone, will need plenty of luck from the rear.
This, in short, looks like the ideal opportunity for City Of Troy to hand Ballydoyle their first Breeders' Cup Classic.
A stallion with Grade One wins on both turf and dirt would command an astronomical fee at stud. The lads at Coolmore have tried to win this race with top turf horses in the past, but so far, they've had no luck.
None have been as good as City Of Troy, though, if you believe Aidan O'Brien's idea that this is "the best horse he's ever trained". O'Brien's star won the Epsom Derby and the Coral-Eclipse Stakes this season, before setting a blistering track record at York when winning the Juddmonte International Stakes from the front.
City Of Troy's prep for the Breeder's Cup Classic took him to Southwell for a gallop on their synthetic track, where Ryan Moore's mount did exactly what we expected. A good draw will be crucial, as the favourite will be given a confident ride. I feel like City Of Troy will either win this by seven or eight lengths, or finish a tailed-off last after missing the break.
2024 Breeders' Cup Classic Tips - Forever Young
Japan are no stranger to success on the Breeder's Cup stage and I'm inclined to take City Of Troy on with their leading three-year-old, FOREVER YOUNG (11/2).
Following an impressive victory in the UAE Derby, Yoshito Yahagi's star traveled over to America for the Kentucky Derby. Ryusei Sakai's mount leapt up in the stalls as they opened, forfeiting crucial early ground. Forever Young worked his way into contention, winning a barging match with Sierra Leone as the leaders straightened for home, but couldn't catch Mystik Dan, who held on to claim a surprise victory.
Forever Young looked as good as ever on his prep run for the Breeders' Cup Classic, running out a ready winner of the Japan Dirt Classic at Ohi earlier this month. Sakai will need a better start than what he got in the Kentucky Derby. Forever Young is at his best when stalking the pace. If he breaks well and is in touch with the leaders turning for home, even City Of Troy might struggle to stop him.
