Breeders' Cup Turf Preview

Epsom Derby winner, Auguste Rodin bounced back from a poor showing in the King George at Ascot by winning the Irish Champion Stakes last time out. Aidan O'Brien's raider is currently the favourite with most bookmakers, but if Prince Of Wales's and Juddmonte International winner, Mostahdaf is confirmed, he will likely go off as the favourite.

French raider Onesto returned to top form with an excellent third in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and he could make the trip over to America for the first time. As could Royal Ascot winner, King Of Steel and Coronation Cup winner, Emily Upjohn.

Auguste Rodin could be joined on the plane over to Santa Anita by Warm Heart, although she's more likely to run in the Filly & Mare Turf. Charlie Appleby, who's had a shocking season in the UK, could be represented by Nations Pride and Rebels Romance, if they impress in their respective trials at Woodbine and Belmont this month.

The highest-placed home entrant in the betting is War Like Goddess, who can be backed at 20/1. Other potential Breeders' Cup runners include Ushba Tesoro, The Foxes, Luxembourg and Bolshoi Ballet.

Breeders' Cup Turf history

The Breeders' Cup Turf is one of three races held on turf during the Breeders' Cup.

Run over 2400m, the Breeders' Cup Turf attracts the best stayers from around the world and they don't fail to turn up.

High Chaparral, Highland Reel and Found have all won the Breeders' Cup Turf and they're some of the biggest names in European staying history.

Italian jockey Frankie Dettori and UK's Ryan Moore have each won on four occasions, most recently with Ryan Moore winning on Found in 2015.

Moore scored on board the Aidan O'Brien-trained runner, which gave O'Brien his fifth win in the race. The Irish champion trainer has since made it six wins in this race with Highland Reel.

Two horses have won consecutive Breeders' Cup Turf races. Conduit and High Chaparral produced back-to-back wins to etch their names in the history of the Breeders' Cup.

Breeders' Cup Turf betting guide

There has been only one runner to win at single-figure odds in the last four years.

The Breeders' Cup Turf has been dominated by the international runners.

Due to the race being run on turf, the European runners are naturally favoured to run well in the Breeders' Cup Turf.

Held on the second day of the festival, the Breeders' Cup Turf is one of the most popular races for punters.

The big stake money on offer makes the Breeders' Cup Turf an attractive race for all comers.

Talismatic caused an upset recently in 2017 when winning at odds of $30.20.

The Andre Fabre-trained runner wasn't fancied against a hot field, including 2017 winner Highland Reel, and it was his first Group 1 victory of his successful career.

Highland Reel scored at odds of $9.60 in 2016 and that was considered to be a great price considering his form all around the world.

Having finished in the placing at the Cox Plate, Highland Reel was an each way chance against a field that included Flintshire and Found.

Bettors have been finding good value with quality runners in recent times and 2015 winner Found was well-found in the market.

Golden Horn was heavily-backed to win the Breeders' Cup Turf but there was late money for Found and it was spot on.
The most recent US-based winner was Main Sequence in 2014, which recorded his fourth consecutive Group 1 victory since changing to the Graham Motion stables.

$14.40 was the price offered by bookmakers for Main Sequence. The field in 2014 also included quality staying types Brown Panther and Chicquita, which would later compete around the world.
