The Pretty Polly Stakes headline day two of the Irish Derby Festival. This ten-furlong Group One has been won by many top-class fillies and mares down the years, with Alexander Goldrun, Peeping Fawn, Minding and Magical featuring on the roll of honour.

2026 Pretty Polly Stakes Runners

Given its timing between the two Classics, it's been a while since we saw an Epsom Oaks winner line up in the Pretty Polly. That will change on Saturday, as Joseph O'Brien runs Thundering On - three weeks after her Classic triumph at Epsom - before returning to the Curragh to try and complete the Oaks double next month.

David O'Meara's grey Estrange returned to action with an easy win at Carlisle last month, and she sits closest to Thundering On in the market. Red Letter did Ger Lyons proud with a fine effort behind See The Fire in the Middleton Stakes at York. She also sits prominently in the market, along with Paddy Twomey's Group Three winner, One Look.

Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore will team up with Beautify. Joseph O'Brien could be further represented by Munster Oaks runner-up Nyra, and Hedge Of Oak Stakes third Wemightakedlongway.

Ed Walker's Qilin Queen could add to the raiding party. Carolina Jetstream completes the field.

2026 Pretty Polly Stakes Tips

I agree with Joseph O'Brien, and believe that 10 furlongs will turn out to be Thundering On's best trip. Dylan Browne McMonagle's mount was superb at Epsom, and she'll be getting 12 pounds from the older fillies and mares in the market.

However, before Whirl's victory over Kalpana 12 months ago, older horses had won the last five renewals of the Pretty Polly, beating some talented three-year-olds in the process. With that in mind, I'm going to chance ONE LOOK (8/1) to beat the short-priced favourite.

Paddy Twomey's mare relished the step up to ten furlongs last season, winning the Meadow Court Stakes convincingly on her first start over the distance. One Look then recorded back-to-back placed efforts behind Barnavara in both the Blandford Stakes and the Prix de l'Opera, before finding a mile-and-a-half a bit of a stretch on her final outing at Ascot.

One Look made her seasonal reappearance in the Lanwades Stakes over a mile here at the Curragh. James Doyle's mount got outpaced at the two-pole and stablemate City Of Memphis sauntered into the lead, but kept on gamely to finish just two lengths adrift of the winner in fourth.

Stepping back up to ten furlongs is sure to suit One Look, who shaped very well in that sharpener in the Lanwades. I'm sure this Group One will have been Twomey's target for the season, and I'm confident that One Look will give Thundering On a run for her money.
