Pertemps Final 2025 - Three classy qualifiers to keep on-side

The second of four handicaps on St Patrick's Day at Cheltenham is the Pertemps Final. Qualifying races have taken place all over Britain and Ireland during the regular season, and a field of 24 will contest the series Final in Thursday.

2025 Pertemps Final Trends
- 10 of the last 10 winners were eight-years-old or younger
- 9 of the last 10 winners had run no more than 5 times over 3m

Only two horses this century have won a Pertemps Qualifier and the Final in the same season. The Wallpark looks best-placed to buck that trend, having bolted up in the qualifier staged at Cheltenham's Showcase Meeting. Gordon Elliott's star would carry top-weight off his mark of 152, which might force connections into running The Wallpark against Teahupoo in the Stayers' Hurdle instead.
In The Wallpark's absence, then Gwennie May Boy and Monmiral will carry top-weight off 149. In a change to the rules for this year, any qualifier rated above 121 is guaranteed a spot in the field, meaning American Sniper for example - the fourth-lowest rated entrant - will run if David Pipe confirmed his entry.
2025 Pertemps Final Tip 1 - Shanagh Bob
There are three horses that I have my eye on at lengthy prices, starting with SHANAGH BOB (25/1). Nicky Henderson's star won the Bristol Novices' Hurdle over this course-and-distance last season, and sat close to the head of the betting for the Brown Advisory Novices' Chase at the beginning of the season.
Shanagh Bob failed to take to fences, jumping terribly on his first two starts over the larger obstacles. Henderson's star dropped back to hurdling for the qualifier at Huntingdon in January, and ran an encouraging race to finish second behind the strong-staying Super Survivor.
Henderson's seven-year-old was well-beaten on his most recent start at Warwick, where the soft ground, shorter trip and sharper track all seemed to work against him. On better ground back at Cheltenham, he certainly has a chance.
2025 Pertemps Final Tip 2 - Karl Des Tourelles
Only two five-year-olds have ever won the Pertemps Final. However, last year's crop of juveniles have proven themselves to be above average and KARL DES TOURELLES (25/1) remains unexposed over staying distances.
Philip Fenton, who trained the winner of the 2009 Champion Bumper, ran Karl Des Tourelles in some fancy four-year-old races last season, including the Grade One at Punchestown and the Prix Alain du Breil at Auteuil. On his reappearance over hurdles, Brian Hayes' mount came through trouble in-running to finish a very good second in the Punchestown qualifier behind Franciscan Rock - who was getting two pounds at the weights from Fenton's youngster and has boosted the form significantly since.
Karl Des Tourelles paid for trying to hang with the pacesetters at Limerick over Christmas, where he was beaten into third behind Meet And Greet. Stepping back up in trip should certainly suit given the way he finished off his race at Punchestown. He looks well-handicapped off a Cheltenham Festival mark of 139.
2025 Pertemps Final Tip 3 - Jipcot
Finally, I'd give JIPCOT (33/1) a good chance of outrunning his current odds. Having not been tried over further than 2m3f in France or during his time with Ben Pauling, Jipcot bolted up on his first start over two-and-a-half miles at Newbury in December, thrashing some decent handicappers like Mr Hope Street and Mr Bramley.
On his first start over three miles, Kielan Woods' mount attempted to win from the rear at Windsor - something that has proven impossible this term - and his late challenge came up two lengths short. Jipcot then travelled nicely into the qualifier at Haydock last month, but when it became clear One Big Bang had flown the nest, Woods wasn't overly harsh on his mount late on, allowing him to coast home and claim the final qualifying spot.
Ben Pauling thought enough of Jipcot to run him in the Triumph Hurdle in 2023 and he's done nothing but progress since being stepped up in distance by Jonjo & AJ O'Neill. A mark of 131 is by no means this horse's ceiling.
Verdict
Shanagh Bob, Karl Des Tourelles and Jipcot are our three shortlisted contenders for the 2025 Pertemps Final.
