Andrew Balding's mare finished seventh behind Daryz 12 months ago before going on to defend her Champion Fillies' And Mares' Stakes title on Champions Day. Kalpana continued her love affair with Ascot in July, where she beat Calandagan and Benvenuto Cellini to land the prestigious King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
Despite wandering around a little in the closing stages, Kalpana claimed her third victory of the season in the Yorkshire Oaks last month. Balding has been training his star mare for the Arc ever since, and the prospect of decent ground at Longchamp is filling the team with confidence.
