Maltese Cross will be the leading British hope in Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
William Haggas' colt has only been beaten once in his career so far, and that came in the Epsom Derby, where he finished second behind Christmas Day on unsuitably soft ground. Maltese Cross bounced back from that defeat by winning the Grand Prix de Paris over the Arc course and distance, where Tom Marquand's mount burst through traffic late on to beat future Prix Niel winner Varandir.
Maltese Cross then proved he was Arc material with a penalty-carrying victory in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York. Haggas opted to bypass the St Leger with his progressive three-year-old, targeting Arc glory at Longchamp instead.
Maltese Cross will be ridden by regular jockey Tom Marquand, and he'll wear the black and red silks of ambitious owner George Waud. We'll update this article on Thursday when the field has been confirmed and the draw has been announced.
