Deep Water Bay Handicap Tips (Race 3)

Happy Valley Next Best Bet - Race 3 No. 8 Akermanis

The David Eustace stable has been a profitable one to follow at Happy Valley over the last 12 months, with his 22 winners at the circuit returning an ROI of 14.5%.

Eustace has also combined strongly with apprentice Jerry Chau during that period, with the pair teaming up for eight winners overall at an ROI of 58%.

Chau was in the saddle when Akermanis made his first Happy Valley appearance on July 8, with the gelding sent around at a big price and unlucky not to win after a wide gate proved costly and he sustained a long run from well back to grab an eye-catching fifth.

Importantly, that effort closed out his preparation in good order following a few poor runs after returning to this level, having earlier shown some promise in better company, including a fifth-of-14 finish over 1200m at Sha Tin.

He looks to have come on if his most recent trial work is any indication, recording two encouraging hit-outs, the latest a soft 1200m piece of work under Chau, while barrier two gives him the platform to improve this season after remaining firm in early markets.

Deep Water Bay Handicap Tips (Race 4)

Happy Valley Roughie - Race 4 No. 8 Chancheng Sparkle

The lead-up work has been only fair, although it can often be difficult to read too much into All-Weather trials, particularly when there has been rain, and Chancheng Sparkle did improve in his second heat despite being well held in second.

The three-year-old brings Griffin form from his first campaign, which can be difficult to assess going forward, but he was competitive throughout that period and his best effort came on debut over 1200m at Sha Tin.

Respected in the betting that day, he was held up at key stages in the straight before working home for a fifth-of-14 finish, with his turf trials leading into that debut also encouraging.

One of those hit-outs caught the eye on May 11 after he had placed in a 1000m Conghua heat on April 27, having been given time following three earlier trials in which he failed to figure.

There is room for the lightly raced type to progress this season, while trainer Francis Lui has made a solid start to the campaign, with winners recorded at both Sha Tin and Happy Valley.

Mount Butler Handicap Tips (Race 8)

Happy Valley Best Bet - Race 8 No. 8 Danica's Choice

Danica's Choice is a lightly raced five-year-old who clearly needed time despite winning a New Zealand maiden in March last year before making his way to Hong Kong.

He failed to deliver through his first few campaigns last season before switching to Manfred Man, with the son of Swiss Ace improving sharply during a three-run preparation to round out the season, beginning with a solid two-length defeat over this track-and-trip.

A brave Class 4 success followed second-up on June 24, when Danica's Choice covered ground and still pulled clear late, before he was well respected in the market when stepping up to Class 3 company on July 15 and narrowly going down to Harmony N Blessed.

There should be further upside with this gelding, particularly against a top weight who is heavily exposed after 81 starts, while Danica's Choice also gets a weight swing on Harmony N Blessed for this fresh assignment.

He looks very forward for his return after bolting in with two 1200m trials, the latest on September 11 when opening up a big margin under Andrea Atzeni, who retains the ride, while his tactical versatility and gate five give him plenty of options in the penultimate.

Tai Hang Handicap Tips (Race 9)

Happy Valley Value Bet - Race 9 No. 12 Flying Fortune

Happy Valley has been a profitable circuit for followers of the Cody Mo stable over the last 12 months, with his 24 winners here coming at an average winning price of just under $12 and an ROI just south of 37%.

The season has also begun well for Mo, who has recorded four winners and four placegetters from 25 starters in September.

Mo prepares Flying Fortune, a five-year-old who continued to improve as his first Hong Kong season wore on, with the gelding failing to show much over sprint trips before the drop to Class 4 and rise in distance brought him right on late last season.

He culminated a consistent run of Happy Valley form with a 1650m victory here on June 24 before a break, while his September 1 trial was a positive lead-up to this return.

The rise back to Class 3 presents a query, but with only nine starts to his name there remains upside for Flying Fortune to measure up in this company, and he tackles the grade in better form, over a more suitable trip and carrying 6.5kg less than last start, which gives him every chance to give some cheek at a price.
