Constitution Hill and Lossiemouth clashed for a second time in the Aintree Hurdle this afternoon.
Constitution Hill came out on top when the two met in the Christmas Hurdle, but came into this Grade One on the back of a fall in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham. Lossiemouth ran out an impressive winner of the Mares' Hurdle on her most recent start and she was well-backed against the market leader after Willie Mullins won the first three Grade Ones at Aintree on Thursday.
The fly in the ointment, as far as the top two were concerned, was Gordon Elliott's Wodhooh. Unbeaten thus far over hurdles, Wodhooh bolted up in the Martin Pipe at Cheltenham and she wasn't unfancied against the two at the head of the market.
Take No Chances had nine lengths to find on Lossiemouth from their clash in the Mares' Hurdle. Break My Soul and Tellherthename were the rank outsiders going into Thursday's final Grade One.
2025 Aintree Hurdle Result
| Position | Name | SP |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Lossiemouth | 5/4 |
| 2nd | Wodhooh | 9/1 |
| 3rd | Take No Chances | 40/1 |
Tellherthename set off quickly and soon opened up a lead. Take No Chances raced five lengths adrift of the leader in the early stages, with Constitution Hill sitting on the rail in third. Lossiemouth and Wodhooh raced side-by-side near the rear, with Break My Soul trailing the field.
Passing the stands for the first time, Wodhooh jumped her way into a share of third. Constitution Hill was a little too big and bold at the fourth flight, but Nico De Boinville still looked happy enough in the saddle as the field swung into the back straight.
Tellherthename maintained his four-length lead. Constitution Hill again wasn't particularly fluent. Neither was Wodhooh, who lost her position slightly. Paul Townend, meanwhile, looked cool, calm and collected in Lossiemouth's saddle.
Townend made his move on the run to the third-last as the field began to bunch up. Faced with a wall of horses ahead of him, Nico De Boinville was under pressure to get back into the contest. Constitution Hill over-stretched at the second-last when trying to match Lossiemouth's move, and came crashing to the canvas for the second race in a row.
As De Boinville picked himself up off the canvas, the two mares opened up a lead. At the last, Lossiemouth and Wodhood were locked in battle, but it was Lossiemouth who came away from the final flight the quicker and forged ahead to claim a clear victory.
Wodhooh ran a valiant race back in second. Take No Chances kept on well to finish a distant third ahead of Break My Soul. Constitution Hill drew applause from the stands as he passed the crowd, but sadly, there was no Nico De Boinville in his saddle.
