The showpiece event at Kempton's Christmas Festival is the King George VI Chase. This historic Grade One, which was first run at Kempton Park back in 1937, has been won by many of the sport's most legendary three-mile chasers, including Arkle, Wayward Lad, Desert Orchid and Kauto Star.

We've taken a look through the confirmed field for this year's King George VI Chase and picked out our best betting tips.

2022 King George VI Chase Entries

Paul Nicholls' will be looking for his 13th victory in the King George VI Chase in 2022. His leading hope this year is undoubtedly Bravemansgame - winner of the Kauto Star Novices' Chase at this meeting 12 months ago and an imperious winner of the Charlie Hall Chase on his reappearance.

L'Homme Presse won two Grade Ones as a novice last season and returned to action with a fine weight-carrying victory in the Rehearsal Chase up at Newcastle. A wave of support has arrived for Williams' chaser in recent days, which has resulted in L'Homme Presse joining Bravemansgame at the head of the King George betting.

Bravemansgame will be joined in the field by stablemate by Hitman, who has placed in four Grade Ones, and Frodon, who claimed a shock victory in this race at Kempton two years ago.  Henry De Bromhead could send over the rejuvenated Envoi Allen, following his victory in the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal last month.

Charlie Hall and Betfair Chase runner-up, Eldorado Allen could represent Joe Tizzard. Venetia Williams has handed a Kempton Christmas Festival entry to Royale Pagaille. Alex Hales' Millers Bank completes the King George field.

2022 King George VI Chase Tips

The ground at Kempton is currently good-to-soft. Some rain has been forecast during the week, but Christmas Eve and Christmas Day look set to be dry and the forecast for Boxing Day is similar. I can't see the ground being any slower than good-to-soft come the day of the race.

That would certainly suit BRAVEMANSGAME, who's drifted out to an appealing price following the support for L'Homme Presse. Of the two, I think L'Homme Presse is the better horse, but the King George is Paul Nicholls' race and, in Bravemansgame, he has the ideal candidate for this contest.

Rarely have I seen a horse take to chasing like Bravemansgame did last year and he clearly possesses a decent change of gear. Nicholls' star has shown a liking for Kempton too, having thrashed Ahoy Senor by seven-and-a-half lengths in the Kauto Star last Christmas.

Despite drifting out to 2/1 before the off, Bravemansgame looked head-and-shoulders above the competition in the Charlie Hall Chase on his reappearance. That drift suggested that Nicholls didn't have his seven-year-old fully wound up for the task at hand, so there's every chance that Harry Cobden's mount will have improved for that first outing of the season.

Despite what Paul Nicholls has said, I'm not having it that Hitman is as good as Bravemansgame. He might be a year younger than his stablemate, but Hitman has run in lots of winnable Graded races and never managed to deliver, and I can't see this step up to three miles bringing about the necessary amount of improvement.

Frodon seems to produce one mighty performance per season and that came at Wincanton first time out. I'm not convinced that Envoi Allen will jump quickly enough for a race like the King George. Outside of the top five, nothing holds any appeal.

Verdict

Bravemansgame is the outstanding candidate to win this year's King George. When Boxing Day arrives, I'm sure he'll be supported back towards 6/4 and 11/8, so I'm going to snap up the 15/8 while it lasts.
