2022 King's Stand Stakes Entries

Wesley Ward is no stranger to success at Royal Ascot and the captain of his raiding party this year is Golden Pal. Ward's star has won his last three races on home soil, including an easy victory at the Breeders' Cup back in November, and HollywoodBet's make Golden Pal their 2/1 favourite for the King's Stand.

Nature Strip will make the long journey from Australia to Ascot for the first time this month, and Chris Waller's eight-time Group One winner sits second in the market. Since A Case Of You and Romantic Proposal were pointed at the Platinum Jubilee, Twilight Calls has been cut into a single-figure price.

King's Lynn will carry The Queen's silks into this year's King's Stand Stakes. Charlie Appleby could run Man Of Promise and LazuliMooniesta and Logo Hunter set to fly the flag for Ireland, with Miroslav Nieslanik's Ponntus set to represent the Czech Republic.

Reigning Nunthorpe Stakes winner, Winter Power will make an appearance on day one of Royal Ascot. Khaadem, Tis Marvellous, Arecibo and Mondammej also feature in what could be a fairly large field.

2022 King's Stand Stakes Tip 1 - Twilight Calls

The fastest horse in this race is, unquestionably, Golden Pal. Wesley Ward's runner always breaks incredibly well and the early speed he uses to win his races is staggering.

On his last visit to England in the Nunthorpe, Golden Pal broke smartly but couldn't sustain that gallop on the straight track at York. The fastest horse doesn't always win sprints around Ascot, due to the testing nature of the course, and I could see the uphill finish catching Golden Pal out.

There's no shortage of early pace on offer in this Group One. Nature Strip has done all of his winning from the front. Ponntos is usually quick out of the clocks too.

The three raiders have been drawn alongside each other in stalls 10, 12 and 13. It's likely they will blaze a trail down the centre of the track, inconveniencing those who's been drawn on the wings.

Winter Power is well known for setting a blistering early gallop, but her task was made harder after being drawn in stall one. Khaadem is another who likes to front run and he too has been drawn low, so there's a chance we could have a break-away group along the inside rail.

This race should set itself up perfectly for a strong traveller to come from off the pace, and the improving TWILIGHT CALLS - who'll be ridden for the first time by Ryan Moore - fits that profile perfectly.

Following an easy handicap win on his reappearance, Twilight Calls ran a cracker from a horrible wide draw to finish a very close fifth behind Khadeem in the Palace House Stakes. Adam Kirby's mount then tracked King's Lynn into the Temple Stakes, but was forced to manoeuvre between runners at a crucial stage and lost out to The Queen's runner by a head.

Henry Candy's only Royal Ascot success came in 2016, when Twilight Son won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. It would be fitting, therefore, if Twilight Calls - by that aforementioned Royal winner - were to mount a winning challenge in the King's Stand Stakes.

2022 King's Stand Stakes Tip 2 - Arecibo

With plenty of bookies likely to pay out on the first four places, I'm going to back another at a longer price. ARECIBO was my each way selection when I tipped the first and second home in this Group One 12 months ago, and I fancy another punt on Robert Cowell's sprinter.

On his reappearance at Newmarket, Arecibo stumbled leaving the stalls and was rushed up to an unusually prominent position, from which he faded when the field met the rising ground. In the Temple Stakes, Arecibo travelled into the race as well as anyone, but hit the front a little too soon and was passed late on by King's Lynn and Twilight Calls.

The faster the early pace the better for Arecibo, who handled fast ground well in this race 12 months ago. Being drawn in stall three isn't ideal, but I still wouldn't be surprised if Cowell's seven-year-old managed to finish inside the places.

Verdict

Twilight Calls will go into the King's Stand on the back of a career-best effort and Henry Candy's budding star looks to have plenty more improvement left in his locker.

I'm also going to take another punt on Arecibo, who placed for me 12 months ago and this year's race should be run to suit.
