The opening day of the Ebor Festival is headlined by one of the biggest races of the season, the Juddmonte International Stakes. Many legends of the game have won this ten-furlong Group One and 13 top-quality runners have been declared for this year's renewal.

2024 Juddmonte International Stakes Tips - Calandagan

City Of Troy was workmanlike when winning the Coral-Eclipse, where the rain-softened ground might not have been to his liking. Al Riffa and See The Fire have boosted the form of that Group One since and better ground will certainly suit the favourite. However, with 12 rivals featuring in the field, even-money isn't a good enough price to tempt me into backing City Of Troy.

With so many runners in the field, I usually look for some value further down the market. However, neither Docklands nor Maljoom appeal on their first starts over ten furlongs. Royal Rhyme needs slower ground to be at his best, Israr doesn't seem up to Group One standard, and both Zarakem and Durezza have plenty to find.

Bluestocking comes here instead of the 12-furlong Yorkshire Oaks. Ralph Beckett's filly has been in excellent form this season, and a fast pace will suit. Alflaila will also be much more effective in an evenly-run contest and Owen Burrows' five-year-old has won three of his four starts on the Knavesmire.

Older horses have won over two-thirds of the renewals of the Juddmonte International that have taken place this century, and those two are certainly the best of this year's older bunch. However, I'm going to side with CALANDAGAN (7/1), in the hope that he can follow in the footsteps of countryman Goliath, who stormed to victory in the King George at Ascot last month.

Calandagan produced one of the most impressive performances of the Royal meeting when landing the King Edward VII Stakes. Stephane Pasquier held his mount up at the rear and was forced wide to challenge. Once his path to the post was clear, Calandagan showed some decent rivals a clean set of heels in the closing stages, forging six lengths clear of Space Legend and Royal Supremacy over the final two furlongs.

The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was mentioned by many as a likely objective following that power-packed victory, before everyone realised that Calandagan was a gelding, and therefore unable to enter that historic contest. Dropping back down to ten furlongs shouldn't bother Calandagan, given how well Francis-Henri Graffard's star quickened away on fast ground at Ascot, and the fast early pace that'll likely be set by Hans Anderson should bring his proven stamina to the fore.

2024 Juddmonte International Stakes

Calandagan was wildly impressive when winning the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot. City Of Troy is a worthy favourite and I like Bluestocking at a longer price, but at 7/1, the rapidly-improving Calandagan offers good value too.
