Europe's most prestigious flat race took place at Longchamp racecourse this afternoon, as a quality field contested the 2025 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Having combined to win the opening two Group Ones on the card, Christophe Soumillon rode Minnie Hauk for Aidan O'Brien, and it was the triple Oaks winner who established herself as the clear favourite during the build-up. Aventure returned for another crack, after finished second to Bluestocking 12 months ago, and Christophe Ferland's star sat second in the market.

Despite the ground easing to Very Soft, by French descriptions, all three Japanese raiders came in for support. Alohi Alii was cut into 12/1 before the off, with Byzantine Dream and Croix Du Nord coming back to the prices that they were before both landed horror wide draws.

The other market mover was Francis Graffard's Quisisana, who was seeking to win two Group Ones in a row following her triumph in the Prix Jean Romanet. Stablemate Daryz had been supported following a favourable draw, with Sosie and Cualificar supported by plenty of punters.

Gezora, White Birch and Leffard were big drifters on the day. Giavellotto took his chance in the contest. Los Angeles, Hotazhell and Arrow Eagle completed the line-up.

As the stalls burst open, Byzantine Dream was slowly away under Oisin Murphy. Christophe Soumillon got off to a lovely start on Minnie Hauk, with Aloha Alii also making the early running.

Croix Du Nord was kept wide from his poor draw early on, but once the field turned into the bend, the Japanese raider took the lead. Hotazhell moved forward to keep Croix Du Nord company, with Los Angeles also making some early progress.

Minnie Hauk hugged the rail for most of the term, with Quisisana sitting alongside the favourite in fifth. Daryz and Leffard were in the third rank, with Kalpana just behind. Gezora, Cualificar and Byzantine Dream bided their time at the rear.

As the leaders turned into the home straight, Christophe Soumillon made his move, angling Minnie Hauk off the rail. Aidan O'Brien's filly rubbed shoulders with stablemate Los Angeles as she burst into contention, and Minnie Hauk soon opened up a lead.

As the leaders began to fall away, eyes were drawn to Kalpana and Aventure, who began to make progress on the outside of the field. Mickael Barzalona and Daryz then made their move, and they soon had the leader in their crosshairs.

Minnie Hauk, the least-experienced runner in the field, began to wander a little under pressure. Daryz loomed onto the leader's shoulder entering the final 200 yards, and it was Francis Graffard's star who edged a neck ahead of Minnie Hauk in the strides before the line.

Barzalona punched the air as Daryz claimed a famous victory. Minnie Hauk lost nothing in defeat, and could return for another crack next year. Meanwhile, Sosie ended up winning the battle for third, crossing the line just ahead of Giavellotto and Byzantine Dream, who both made strong late progress from the rear.
