An ante-post selection for the Stewards' Cup handicap, which takes place on the final day of Glorious Goodwood on August 3rd.

Yesterday, I put up Billyjoh at 12/1 for the International Stakes at Ascot. My latest ante-post piece focusses on the feature handicap of the Glorious Goodwood meeting, the Stewards' Cup, where I fancy the chances of a 16/1 outsider.

3/8/24 Goodwood Stewards' Cup - Lethal Levi

Alban De Mieulle looks set to send Dark Trooper over from France for the Stewards' Cup. James Doyle's mount received a three-pound hike in the weights for his runner-up finish in the Wokingham, meaning he'll carry 9-07 if top-weight and two-time winner, Commanche Falls takes up his entry.

Six of the last seven winners of this historic handicap have carried 9-01 or more, so Dark Trooper's weight isn't an issue. That being said, there won't be many runners in the field carrying less than 9-00 and there are a few who look to be treated better than the ante-post favourite.

An in-form runner who I'm sure will go off at a shorter price is LETHAL LEVI (16/1). Karl Burke's star endured a winless campaign in 2023, but ended that losing streak in May, as Clifford Lee's mount ran away with the valuable World Pool Handicap at Newbury.

Lethal Levi has run well in defeat twice since then. Burke's five-year-old looked a little lonely when he hit the front in the Wokingham and was relegated to fourth in the closing stages. Lethal Levi then travelled supremely well at the front of the field in the Bunbury Cup, where only Aalto was good enough to pass him.

Despite that runner-up effort, Burke's charge has never looked a convincing stayer over seven furlongs, so I'm not surprised to see that Lethal Levi hasn't been entered in the International Stakes Handicap at Ascot next weekend. The Stewards' Cup is the goal and the long-range weather forecast is positive, so Lethal Levi could get the fast ground that he craves on the final day of Glorious Goodwood.
