Rosallion's withdrawal on Wednesday afternoon left just five runners to take their chance in this year's Sussex Stakes.
Aidan O'Brien's Henry Longfellow, second to Rosallion in the St James's Palace Stakes, topped the Goodwood betting. 2000 Guineas winner, Notable Speech was looking to bounce back after a poor effort at Royal Ascot and they were the sole three-year-old entrants.
Three older milers took on the Classic generation. 2023 runner-up, Facteur Cheval sat third in the market, ahead of William Haggas' Maljoom and Group One debutante, Sonny Liston.

With no other pace-setters in the race, Ryan Moore took Henry Longfellow straight to the front. Sonny Liston kept the leader honest in the early stages, with Notable Speech on the rail in third. Maljoom and Facteur Cheval took their time at the rear of the field.
With three furlongs to travel, all five jockeys looked happy. With the cutaway in sight, Ryan Moore began to stoke up the leader and Henry Longfellow attempted to extend his advantage.
William Buick darted to the inside rail and Notable Speech, who checked out tamely at Royal Ascot, responded. Charlie Appleby's 2000 Guineas winner sprinted into the lead in the blink of an eye and Henry Longfellow simply had no response.
Maljoom and Facteur Cheval attempted to make inroads from the rear, but it was too little too late. William Buick wagged his finger at the stands as Notable Speech crossed the line, recording his second Group One success this season.
