Longchamp Tips on October 5th - Five tips on day one of the Arc meeting

The 2024 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe meeting kicks off with a fantastic card at Longchamp on Saturday. Two Group Ones, the Prix du Cadran and the Prix de Royallieu headline the action, with three further pattern races also featuring on the schedule.

Here are our best betting tips for the five big races at Longchamp on Saturday.

Longchamp Tips - Saturday 5th October


12:23pm Longchamp - Prix Chaudenay Tips


Illinois brings by far the best form into Saturday's opening pattern race at Longchamp. Aidan O'Brien's colt won the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot and was touched off by Jan Brueghel in the St Leger last time out. Staying this extended distance won't be a problem for Illinois and the ground is believed to be better than the current "Very Soft" going description.

At the prices, I'll chance my arm with COLUMBUS (8/1), who is two-from-two over this distance. Christophe Ferland's rising star beat Strassia during a comfortable Listed win at Deauville in August, before following up in the Group Three Prix Gerlad de Geoffre over this course-and-distance last month, comfortably seeing off Shamarkand in the process. 

Augustin Madamet committed early the last day, knowing his mount would see out the trip. I'd rather back Columbus at 8s than Illinois at 1/3.

3:25pm Longchamp - Prix Daniel Wildenstein Tips


In a wide-open renewal of this Group Two, MAKE ME KING (8/1) has to be in with a big chance. This Dark Angel gelding was trained in France by Andre Fabre before being snapped up by Wathnan Racing and moved to Hamad Al Jehani for a winter campaign in Meydan.

Al Jehani has since moved his operation to England and Make Me King has run well in a number of big handicaps since, finally landing a decent pot on the all-weather at Newcastle in June. On his return to France last month, James Doyle's mount destroyed a decent field to win the Prix Quincey, powering home from just off the pace to score by an easy three lengths. 

Make Me King proved he could handle softer ground that day and Doyle will be pleased with his draw in stall five. He looks well up to Group Two company.

4:00pm Longchamp - Prix de Royallieu Tips


Since this 14-furlong contest was upped to Group One status in 2019, British horses have come out on top every time, so it's no surprise to see raiders dominating the betting. 

I'm keen on the chances of ONE EVENING (7/1), who looked like a progressive stayer to follow last autumn. John and Thady Gosden have only managed to get their mare on the track twice so far this term, and Kieran Shoemark's mount was comfortably beaten on her reappearance at Newmarket in July, where the ground was probably a little quick for her liking.

On her most recent start, One Evening produced a huge performance in the Prix de Pomone, finishing just a quarter-of-a-length behind Aventure. Aventure has since finished second in the Prix Vermeille and runs in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, so One Evening's form looks rock solid. Over this longer trip, she should go very close.

4:35pm Longchamp - Prix Dollar Tips


It's hard to look beyond ANMAAT (11/8), who won this race for Owen Burrows back in 2022. Jim Crowley's mount only ran twice last season, finishing second to former Derby winner Adayar on his reappearance, before holding on gamely to win his first Group One in the Prix d'Ispahan.

Again, Burrows has had trouble keeping his star six-year-old fit. Anmaat has only been seen once so far in 2024 and, while he could only win the Group Three Rose Of Lancaster Stakes by a neck, the runner-up Certain Lad has since beaten Arc runner Haya Zark in a Group Three on French soil. Burrows has been busy preparing his star for an autumn campaign since that victory back in August and there are few better target trainers in the business, especially with fragile horses.
