2000 Guineas winner Bow Echo has had his racing career cut short, after a setback suffered after Glorious Goodwood saw him retired to stud.

Bow Echo has, undoubtedly, been the star of the 2026 flat season. George Boughey's colt entered the season unbeaten, and went on to wow flat racing fans with superb victories at Newmarket, Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood.

Comparisons were made with Frankel as Bow Echo stormed to a stunning victory in the 2000 Guineas. Boughey's star then got jockey Billy Loughnane out of trouble with a narrow victory in the St James's Palace Stakes, before the pair repeated that trick against the older horses in the Sussex Stakes.

Following that victory at Glorious Goodwood, Boughey seemed keen to test his star on the International front, highlighting key one-mile races in France and the Breeders' Cup. Sadly, all plans were shelved on Tuesday, as Boughey's team made a shock announcement.

A statement on Boughey's official X account read, "It is with great disappointment that we have to announce that Bow Echo has had a setback and will be retired from racing."

Boughey then spoke at length to the press, expressing his gratitude to late owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid for allowing him to train such a phenomenal horse.

"Bow Echo's remarkable story began with his owner-breeder, the late Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, and it is a great sadness that he was not here to see what a lifetime of breeding was able to produce.

"We will all miss seeing Bow Echo at home and on the racecourse, but we are incredibly excited for his next chapter and in time, to see a new generation of his progeny on the racecourse."

"Bow Echo's unbelievable constitution and extraordinary ability have set him apart."

Speaking to Nick Luck on Wednesday, Boughey provided a bit of extra information about the setback that forced this retirement.

Boughey said, “He (Bow Echo) showed a very low-grade lameness which meant we x-rayed him just to make sure he was okay and there was a slight change there.

“We do everything in the best interest of the horse to stop an injury which could be catastrophic. The horse has eaten up and is basically sound. He’s in very good spirits.”

Loughnane was also quick to praise the horse that's helped propel him to global stardom. The young rider partnered Bow Echo on all six of his career starts, stating that Boughey's colt was "incredibly special".

"Bow Echo has been the most unbelievable racehorse and has given me days in the saddle that I could only ever have dreamed of." said Loughnane.

"I can’t thank George and the whole team enough. George has trained him to perfection throughout his career and I feel incredibly lucky to have been Bow Echo's jockey in all six of his starts."

"Of course it’s disappointing that we won’t see him on the racecourse again, but he retires unbeaten having done everything that was asked of him. It has been a privilege to ride him and he’ll always mean a huge amount to me."
